Another Sobriety Checkpoint is Coming to the State

New Hampshire State Police will be stopping vehicles this week as part of an effort to crack down on drunk driving.

CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire State Police will be holding a sobriety and safety checkpoint in Chichester this week, according to a state police alert. The sobriety checkpoint will be held in Chichester the week of Aug. 14, 2016, according to Staff Sgt. Charles Johnston, an assistant commander with Troop D.

“As a result of the increasing incidents of drinking and driving, the New Hampshire State Police applied for, and was granted, an order from the Merrimack County Superior Court to conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint,” Johnston stated. “The sobriety checkpoint is the most effective method of detecting and apprehending the impaired operator.”

Johnston noted that the program, approved by the NH Highway Safety Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provides federal highway safety funds to support these checkpoints.

“A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents,” he noted. “The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to detect and apprehend the impaired driver.”

The New Hampshire State Police has taken an aggressive stance to prevent persons from driving when intoxicated, Johnston stated.

“New Hampshire has some of the most aggressive laws in the country to fight the intoxicated driver and the law enforcement community will use those tools to their full extent,” he added.
