Driver Drowns After Crashing Mustang Into River: State Police Roundup
State officials are distressed by the number of fatal motorcycle crashes so far in 2023 — a 20-year high. Plus, arrest blotters around NH.

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Errol on Tuesday.
A little past 4 p.m., Troop F received a call via E-911 about a vehicle crashing in the Androscoggin River. The car, the caller said, was completely submerged in water. Errol fire and rescue teams and troopers were at the scene within minutes, Amber Lagace, the public information officer for state police, said.
“Upon arrival at the scene, first responders located a vehicle just under the water line on the east side of the road,” she said. “They were unable to locate a driver or any passengers and were unable to access the vehicle due to the depth of the water.”

Due to the car being in the river, New Hampshire Fish and Game responded with its dive team as well as the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol. Milan firefighters also assisted.
Conservation officers found the vehicle, a 2000 Ford Mustang with a Maine registration, about 50 feet off the shoreline in about 12 to 15 feet of water. The driver, Michael Marshall, 21, of Littleton, was still inside. He was the only person believed to be in the vehicle at the time of the crash, she added.

Motorcycle Deaths Reach 20-Year High
State safety officials say, so far, this year, 2023 has been the deadliest ever for fatal motorcycle crashes.
Since Jan. 1, 35 motorcycle operators, three passengers, and a moped operator have been killed due to crashes. Thirty-one of the victims were men and 31 were also Granite Staters.
“For each life lost, many more lives were altered forever,” said New Hampshire Department of Safety Assistant Commissioner Eddie Edwards. “Our goal, within the Office of Highway Safety, is to quickly stop this tragic trend.”
During the last two decades, the average number of fatal motorcycle crashes was 22 riders. The last time deaths were close to 40 was in 2005, when 43 riders lost their lives.
Larry Crowe, the state coordinator of the Motorcycle Rider Education Program at the Division of Motor Vehicles, called the data “particularly distressing” and said riders needed to take ownership and control of what they can and prepare to respond to what they cannot.
“None of us think, ‘This is the ride that I crash,’ when we throw our leg over the bike,” he said. “Making smart choices, like slowing down, as well as aggressively predicting traffic issues, can help prevent a crash. While things absolutely out of our control do happen, a helmet can be the difference between picking the bike up to assess damage, waiting for an ambulance — or worse.”
Traci Beaurivage, president of the New Hampshire Motorcyclists’ Rights Organization, added, “With the number of fatalities this year, it is imperative that all motorcyclists remember to RideSMART — Safely, Maturely, Aware, Respectfully and Trained. We, as riders, need to be responsible for our actions and make SMART decisions when we ride. Please do your part.”
