Demosthenes Macheras of Pelham faces charges after an August 2023 crash on Lake Winnipesaukee. Plus: Blotters from around New Hampshire.

CONCORD, NH — An elderly man from Pelham was arrested by New Hampshire State Police accused of assisting the driver of a boat and passengers to flee a hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee in August 2023.
Demosthenes Macheras, 69, was arrested on Friday by Pelham police on simple assault and hindering apprehension charges.
Around 11 p.m. on Aug. 12, 2023, Marine Patrol and Wolfeboro police were sent to a boat crash report in the Winter Harbor area of the lake. They found, according to a report, a 50-foot SeaRay boat, on some rocks after crashing into another boat and a dock it was secured to. A man, according to Tyler Dumont, a public information officer for the department, was seen fleeing the area before police and the Marine patrol arrived.

“The operator and several passengers onboard the SeaRay were retrieved by and left the scene in another boat, a blue 1997 Well Craft, registered out of Pelham,” he said. “Witnesses reported that the Well Craft removed the former occupants of the SeaRay from the scene and headed toward Tuftonboro, where it was later located docked at a residence.”
During their investigation, officials accused Macheras of being the operator of the Well Craft that removed the operator of the boat and passengers from the scene. He is due in Ossipee District Court on June 4.
