Soucy Seeks Rematch for Ward 8 Concord City Council Seat

Heights candidate who lost in 2013 by 10 votes, files by petition, adds fourth competitive ward seat to the mix.

A long-time Heights resident and community activist has decided to give the Ward 8 seat another look by filing by petition with the Concord City Clerk’s Office, according to City Clerk Janice Bonenfant.

Dennis Soucy submitted 50 signatures on Sept. 17, 2015, gaining ballot access in the race for the Ward 8 seat currently held by Gail Matson. Bonenfant confirmed that the signatures were good and he would be on the ballot on Nov. 3, 2015. Gathering signatures with an extended deadline is allowed, if a candidate files but chooses not to pay the $5 stipend.

Soucy ran two years and lost to another challenger, Matson, by just 10 votes. The incumbent ward councilor at the time – current state Rep. Dick Patten, D-Concord – had decided not to run for re-election. Patten though changed his mind, and a few of his supporters gathered signatures to place him onto the ballot in an attempt to keep his seat.

On Election Day, Matson received 151 votes to Soucy’s 141. Patten received 73, according to the results.
