Last Day For Hoboken's Only Diner Is New Year's Eve, Manager Says

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken's only remaining diner — the 24-hour Malibu Diner in Hoboken — will serve up its omelettes, roasted chickens and seafood dinners only through Dec. 31, a manager confirmed Thursday morning. But it will return in about two years following redevelopment, he said.

The diner has been perched at the northern entrance to the mile-square city since the 1940s. While space for restaurants is usually limited in Hoboken, the Malibu offers a parking lot, two rooms with tables and booths, extensive meal options, and a glass display of cakes and pies.

The Babalis family took over the Malibu in 1979. But in 2019, the property owners submitted plans to someday demolish and rebuild the diner as part of a larger development including residential and commercial space. READ MORE: Patriarch Of Popular Malibu Diner In Hoboken Passes Away

The closure will leave Hoboken without a diner, as the Spa Diner near the southern end of town shut down in 2018. But Hoboken does have a bevy of restaurant options, including one hotly anticipated eatery opening next week (see new restaurant list below).
