Rare April Snow Forecasted For Much Of Northeast

And before you ask, no, this isn't an April Fools' Day joke.

NEW YORK, NY — Snow in April is forecasted for parts of the Northeast, with the National Weather Service projecting up to 4 inches of snowfall overnight for the Philadelphia and New York City areas.

Philadelphia

In the Philadelphia area, a winter weather advisory is in effect overnight Monday until 1 p.m. Monday afternoon. The agency forecasted 2-4 inches of wet snow in all for parts of southern New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania, the advisory said.

"Rain or a wintry mix is expected to develop between Midnight and 3 AM Monday then quickly change to wet snow," the agency said. "Wet snow will continue Monday morning and become moderate to potentially heavy at times, then taper off around midday."

An inch or two of snow could fall each hour in the region between about 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., the agency said. Travelers should expect slippery roads on Monday morning and reduced visibility.

The weather service in Mount Holly says Monday's snow could make the top 10 list of snowiest Aprils ever in the Philadelphia area. The last time the city had snow in April was 1996, when 2.4 inches fell.

New York City

A winter weather advisory was also issued for the New York City area on Monday from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. The NWS projected snowfall of 2-4 inches for the region with snowfall rates of about 1 inch per hour on Monday morning.

The advisory covers parts of northeastern New Jersey, southern Connecticut and southeastern New York, including New York City.

The NWS says travelers in this area should also expect slick roads on Monday morning and reduced visibilities.

Parts of northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and into the Poconos Mountains could see up to 6 inches.

Washington, D.C./Baltimore

Drivers in the Washington, D.C. area should expect wet conditions on Monday morning, with a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow possible. Several inches of snow may fall in parts of Maryland, too, weather officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Washington, D.C., and parts of northern Virginia. A mix of rain and snow are forecasted for the area overnight Monday for areas near and west of the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan areas.

New England

A few inches of April snow are also projected for areas of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The South Coast is expected to get the most snow at 3-4 inches. Boston and its suburbs are projected to get 1-2 inches and northern Massachusetts could just get a dusting.

“It’s pretty rare, but it does happen though,” Trent Davis, meteorologist in Mount Holly, New Jersey, told The Associated Press.
