CONCORD, NH — Two drivers were taken to the hospital on Monday after one, who was outside his vehicle, was struck by his own vehicle after a transit van hit it.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Route 101 in Auburn, New Hampshire, State Police were sent to a report of a man struck by a vehicle. When they arrived, they found two injured drivers and called for EMTs. Firefighters and EMTs from Auburn and Candia arrived along with police from Auburn.

One driver, Cody Douglas, 23, of Lyndeborough was outside his 2006 Subaru Forester on the side of the highway after it became disabled and stopped against a guardrail. The vehicle, Amber Lagace, a public information officer for the state police, said, was partially in the high-speed lane.

The Subaru was struck by a 2023 Ford transit van, being driven by Timothy Philbrick, 56, of Merrimack. The crash then pushed the Subaru into Douglas, “sending him airborne,” she said.

“Due to the sustained damage and inability to brake, Philbrick’s vehicle continued traveling for approximately one-quarter of a mile before coming to final rest on the right side of the roadway,” Lagace said. “Both operators were transported to a local area hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Route 101 was partially closed for around 90 minutes while the crash was investigated. Vehicles were able to travel in the breakdown lane.
