ELLINGTON, CT — The best way to find this week's Hidden Gem is the follow the nose. It will lead right to a bend bend on Route 83 in Ellington and LuAnn's bakery.

Even by bakery standards, LuAnn's sets standards. Every item on the menu is made from scratch based on once super-secret recipes great-grandmothers, grandmothers, aunts and friends that made their way into LuAnn's kitchen. But the chefs aren't shy about getting creative too and there are always plenty of daily and seasonal specials.

LuAnn's primary location is at 238 Somers Road, the local address for that section of Route 83. It also has a sister location at the Big Y Express plaza, where it operates a drive-up location against the backdrop of sprawling farmland.

LuAnn's is not only about the food. It's about community. Programs like the "drink of the month" club that benefit a different charity every month or our the "Pay it forward bulletin," where a friend buys a friend a favorite treat and leaves it on a bulletin board for him or her to find and redeem, are staples of the business.

LuAnn's also accepts donations through its online ordering service to help feed local healthcare providers. Drinks and pastries are delivered to healthcare workers at local hospitals who are working amid the coronavirus pandemic.
