Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY-D) Plans to Blame Trump-GOP for Likely Federal Gov't Shutdown as 3rd U.S. Dem Senator Won't Run

'Another one!' Longtime Senate Democrat announces not running for reelection

Retirement comes after Democrat senators Gary Peters of Michigan and Tina Smith of Minnesota announced they would not seek office again

New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announced she will not seek reelection in a video posted to social media Wednesday morning.

The announcement from the 78 years-old senator came after the New Hampshire Democrat faced intense speculation about whether she would retire instead of seeking a fourth term. Shaheen's retirement announcement will likely put the New Hampshire Senate seat in play during the 2026 midterms.

"Today, after careful consideration, I'm announcing that I have made the difficult decision not to seek reelection to the Senate in 2026.

There are urgent challenges ahead, both here at home and around the world. And while I'm not seeking re-election – believe me – I am not retiring."

"Another one!" National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Tim Scott of South Carolina said following Shaheen's retirement announcement. "Shaheen's retirement is welcome news for Granite Staters eager for new leadership. New Hampshire has a proud tradition of electing common-sense Republicans — and will do so again in 2026!"

Shaheen would have been 85 at the end of another six-year term in January 2033, making her older than all but one senator in the upper chamber today.

New Hampshire voters are concerned about how Shaheen's age would have impacted her ability to continue serving in the upper chamber, according to recent polling.

Roughly 60% of New Hampshire residents say they are concerned that Shaheen's age would impact her ability to serve for a fourth term, according to a survey of 626 registered voters conducted by Praecones Analytica for NHJournal between Feb. 26 and March 1. Just over 16% of voters told the pollster they were "not concerned at all" about the senator's age.

MSNBC Host Chris Hayes criticized Shaheen for considering a run for a fourth term in December.

"Democrats are not taking this [age] issue seriously, and they need to," Hayes said during a Dec. 17 "All In with Chris Hayes" episode. "[T]his is nothing against Shaheen personally. But according to Pew Research Center polling from just last year, 79% of Americans support age limits for politicians in Washington."

Shaheen's retirement announcement comes after Democratic Sens. Gary Peters of Michigan and Tina Smith of Minnesota announced they would not seek reelection.

According to right-leaning Breitbart, South Dakota Senator and Republican Senate Majority Leader John "Thune Calls Senate Democrats’ Bluff, Moves Forward on Trump-Backed, House-Passed Funding Plan."

"Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) announced Wednesday afternoon following a lunch with his Democrat caucus that he would reject a House-passed government plan to keep the government funded past the Friday deadline through the end of the fiscal year, September 30."

"Thune has 53 Republicans to Schumer’s 47 Democrats, although Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has stated he will oppose the CR. Therefore, eight Democrats will be needed to invoke cloture and fast track the bill."

"The relatively-clean continuing resolution (CR) totals only 99 pages, and includes minimal modifications to current spending levels – including $485 million for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requested by President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, to facilitate continued deportations."

"The CR passed the House Tuesday with one Democrat in support and one Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), bucking his party. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other top Trump administration officials invested significant political capital to pass the bill."

The popular financial-political-news site ZeroHedge site posted this pithy remark via X and pointed to the following.

"Dems will protest Musk firing half the government by shutting down all of government."

As left-leaning Politico noted and ZeroHedge said: "the situation isn't great."

With 52 Republicans expected to back the House-passed stopgap, eight Democrats would need to help advance it to a final Senate vote. So far only one — Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania — has indicated he'll support it. Other key swing voters are on the fence. Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) told reporters Wednesday that he remains undecided on the seven-month funding bill, which passed the House mostly along party lines Tuesday. Asked when he would make a decision, he quipped he'd make up his mind before the end of the Senate vote on the bill, which hasn’t yet been scheduled.

Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is a 'no' on the bill."

According to left-leaning "Axios, Senate Democrats left a private meeting on Wednesday saying there aren't enough votes to advance the bill, raising the chances of a government shutdown this weekend."

"To that end, Senate Democrats are now pushing for a 30-day funding package that would give bipartisan negotiators more time to reach a deal."
