The Freedom Foundation creates teachers’ union alternative

(The Center Square) – A free-market think tank launched a teachers' union alternative for public educators.

The Freedom Foundation announced the creation of the Teacher Freedom Alliance (TFA).

The TFA is a free-to-join organization created for teachers frustrated with the direction of public education, specifically those who feel teachers' unions have politicized the classroom.

“Public employees are leaving their unions in record numbers, frustrated by the funding of radical agendas driven by union bosses,” Freedom Foundation CEO Aaron Withe said in a news release. “The Teacher Freedom Alliance offers an alternative for pro-America educators who seek to restore traditional values in the classroom and provide students with the high-quality education they deserve– free from political influence and union control.”

A goal of the TFA is to make teachers' unions obsolete, the release said.

Another is to promote traditional values in school rather than controversial teachings about gender and race.

"TFA is committed to promoting traditional educational values, providing teachers with superior resources, and fostering a school culture where educators are empowered to advocate for themselves and their students with an emphasis on excellence in the classroom over radical ideologies," the release said. "With teachers increasingly disillusioned by the agendas and reckless political spending of union leadership, TFA offers a much-needed alternative.

"As an alternative to traditional unions, TFA offers pro-America educators a place to find support and comradery in an organization dedicated to restoring the broken education system – without any additional cost to those who choose to join," it added.

Since 2023, TFS has educated over 500 educators from 35 states about their First Amendment rights for union representation and the resources they have available to them.

The 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees makes such a union alternative viable nationwide. In the case, the court ruled public sector employees nationwide cannot be forced to pay union dues as a condition of employment, even in states that lack right-to-work laws.

In the four years after the landmark decision, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees saw 200,000 members stop paying dues.

There has been a significant push for over a decade to create alternative option moderates and conservatives to those organizations and institutions that have long been domination by the left.

That push is in some ways predate and/or parallel to the MAGA or America First movement that now 47th President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump has been leading during the past 10 years. It is a push for common sense as well as for patriotism. Some of those who have championed or helped bankroll the leftist agenda have begun to take notice.

In part of the item posted above, is a short column by Star Parker. Per left-leaning Wikipedia: "In 1995, she founded the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE). In 2010, she was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for the United States House of Representatives in California's 37th District." Parker was ahead of her time in establishing a more conservative alternative, and there are numbers of other examples like hers.

The Young Americans Foundation (YAF) website says the following.

Young America’s Foundation is the leading organization for young conservatives. With more than 60 years of history and contacts on more than 2,000 campuses, we help students like you find support, promote your conservative views and take action.

It features speakers like Dr. Ben Carson, former Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the first term of POTUS Trump.

Apparently, Dr. Carson felt there was a need to push an agenda that he felt wasn't being fully met or needed additional support, and perhaps that gave him more of a platform to be involved. According to left-leaning Bing's AI powered Copilot: "The American Cornerstone Institute (ACI) was founded by Dr. Ben Carson in 2021. The organization promotes conservative political beliefs and perspectives on history, focusing on principles such as faith, liberty, community, and life."

Also per Copilot is this.

Here are a few conservative organizations that have emerged in the last decade:

Turning Point USA: Founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk, this organization focuses on promoting conservative values on college campuses across the United States.
The Federalist Society: While not new, it has gained significant influence in recent years, particularly in shaping the judiciary by advocating for conservative legal principles.
PragerU: Established in 2009 by Dennis Prager and Allen Estrin, this organization produces educational videos that promote conservative viewpoints on various social and political issues.

These organizations, like the American Cornerstone Institute, aim to influence public opinion and policy through education and advocacy.

Copilot also said this.

The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) was founded in 2007 by Daniel C. Weber. It positions itself as a conservative alternative to the AARP, advocating for policies that align with conservative values.

So, while there have long been more moderate or conservative platforms in the U.S., be it nonprofits or media like TCS or the Daily Signal, there has been an apparent rise in the 21st century of more platforms for those who hold to more traditional beliefs to turn to for support. Per Copilot: "The Center Square's media operation was launched in May 2019. The Daily Signal, on the other hand, was launched in June 2014."
