Christopher Shumway, 48, of Park Street in Rutland, VT, and/or Fairee, VT, was arrested at 12:43 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2017, for theft by unauthorized taking or transfer. On Jan. 27, 2010, at around 6:30 a.m., according to a court affidavit, officers were sent to Eastman Street for a report of stolen vehicle complaint. A woman alleged that sometime during the evening, her Ford Taurus station wagon with a purse inside was stolen. While canceling her credit cards, the woman learned that her Discover card had been used in Lebanon, Ascutney, VT, Bellows Falls, VT, and an attempted use in Putney, VT, which was declined. On Feb. 19, 2010, the investigating officer received a copy of surveillance video from the Ascutney store, and allegedly saw a man in a purple coat driving the stolen vehicle and then, entering the store to make a purchase. Nine days later, Virginia State Police located the vehicle in a rural part of the state, parked in a field, according to the affidavit. The person who found the vehicle had been a victim of a burglary a few weeks before and thought the vehicle – with New Hampshire plates in a Virginia field – might be connected to his case, according to state police. In March 2010, the officer spoke with a state trooper who was also investigating the burglary case in Virginia who had “some intricacies” in his case – including an P&C Bus ticket from White River Junction, VT, to Concord, dated Jan. 26, 2010, the day before the car theft, as well as a prescription card found in the trash of the victim’s home. The name of the bus ticket was allegedly Chris Shumway; the prescription was another name with a last name of Shumway. The burglary victim said he didn’t know anyone by those names, according to the affidavit. The investigating officer pulled up Shumway’s info and found “an extensive criminal history that spanned multiple states and included multiple burglaries and auto theft related charges,” according to the affidavit. On March 17, 2010, Virginia State Police questioned Shumway about the Concord vehicle theft case and credit card purchases and he allegedly admitted to them. The affidavit was filed on April 23, 2010, and he was arrested last month.
