When you can buy a new home that by federal law is required to perform dynamically the same as a conventional 'site built' house and that new factory-built or manufactured home is lagging behind its historic norms that should cause thinking people, researchers, and more media to ask: why? How is it possible you can buy a home for 'half the price' of site-built construction, that in several states has been appreciating at a faster pace than conventional housing, have federal standards on durability, energy savings, performance, warranties and a dispute resolution program not commonly available for higher cost conventional housing, yet still be lagging during an affordable housing crisis? The answers are often found in third-party research such as the reports linked here on MHLivingNews.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) did a recent brief to their members that included an arguably misleading infographic. NLIHC has apparently taken on in a flawed fashion the topic even though they have previously provided their readers with a three page brief by Doug Ryan on the importance of manufactured housing for those on tight budgets and limited incomes. See that report with analysis linked above.

See the context of Doug Ryan's remarks and the full 'debate' with the Manufactured Housing Institute's controversial Lesli Gooch plus analysis in the report linked here. https://www.manufacturedhomepronews.com/epic-kevin-clayton-moat-rant-analysis-lesli-gooch-debate-defense-doug-ryan-charge-end-clayton-monopoly-over-manufactured-housing-breaching-buffett-berkshire-clayton-monopolistic-moat-method/

Day by day, week by week, Manufactured Home Pro News along with our Mobile and Manufactured Home Living News (a.k.a.: MHLivingNews) sister site shine the spotlight on subjects related to manufactured housing that are often widely misunderstood. Honest manufactured home professionals admit that there are challenges, but they also can proudly point to the fact that new home satisfaction and performance are commonly praised by new manufactured home buyers.

The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) has referred to the challenges that face the industry as "bottlenecks."

https://manufacturedhousingass...

Washington, D.C. based MHARR has called upon the new Trump Administration (a.k.a.: Trump 2.0 or T2) to look carefully at the regulatory and other challenges that have cost the industry hundreds of thousands of jobs and the loss of thousands of once successful businesses.

While agreeing with much that MHARR advocates for and does, MHProNews has gone beyond that trade group to routinely provide third-party research that routinely does two things. Debunks common but mistaken notions while underscore the need for reform and legal action to uproot arguably predatory firms and organizations, which some have argued includes the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) as a tool used by so-called predatory consolidators.

Curiously, NLIHC used a document authored by Doug Ryan to promote manufactured homes as important and useful, especially for people with a lower income. Ryan has named Clayton Homes and the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) among the reasons more competitive financing isn't available under the Duty to Serve Manufactured Housing (DTS) federal law. Biden-Harris (D) failed to enforce what Ryan, a progressive, called for - will President Donald J. Trump and V.P. J.D. Vance do so? https://www.manufacturedhomepronews.com/masthead/loper-brights-light-on-fhfa-fannie-mae-freddie-mac-duty-to-serve-manufactured-housing-and-a-pimple-on-an-elephants-ass-eye-opening-warren-buffett-dts-for-manufactured-homes-wit/

Vice President J.D. Vance (R) recently addressed the National League of Cities (NLC). He logically pointed out the obvious math that illegal aliens living in the U.S. are competing with American citizens and those legally in the country for housing during an affordable housing crisis. Hmm...okay, fair enough. However...

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

As left-leaning Bing's AI powered Copilot pointed on on 3.16.2025 in commenting on that speech, Vance may have implied the need for manufactured housing, but he did not specifically mention manufactured homes. Here is the Q&A with the inquiry by this writer for MHProNews and this Patch.

Can you find any evidence that Vice President J.D. Vance has mentioned manufactured housing since he was sworn in as vice president?

Yes, Vice President J.D. Vance has mentioned manufactured housing in his public statements since taking office. For instance, during the Congressional Cities Conference on March 10, 2025, he emphasized the importance of providing affordable housing for Americans. While he didn't explicitly use the term "manufactured housing," his remarks about affordable housing align with the broader goals of the manufactured housing industry.

That was linked to this report that paraphrased in the headline part of what Vance told the NLC. 'I'm Hard Pressed to Think of a Time in the last 40 Years Where It's been so Hard for Normal American Citizens to Afford a Home' - Vice President J.D. Vance to Cities; VP_ Vance Meet J.D. Harper [AMHA]

The remarks cited and provided by J.D. Harper of the Arkansas Manufactured Housing Association (AMHA) are buttressed in that report by legal and other evidentiary references. Among them are remarks by both major trade group, MHI and MHARR. MHARR's remarks are by an attorney who has spent decades working on manufactured housing related legal issues, Mark Weiss, J.D., the president and CEO of MHARR.

MHARR has been publicly proclaiming its engagement efforts with the what it has called "Trump 2.0" which it says is the manufactured home "Industry's Second Chance."

https://manufacturedhousingassociationregulatoryreform.org/trump-2-0-the-industrys-second-chance-mharr-issues-and-perspectives/

Whatever MHI is doing, it has been publicly mute about it.

A series of Q&As with AI powered Copilot included the following. The inquiry was by this writer and the response was per Copilot, which linked three results on the Patch.

You mentioned transparency at MHARR or the lack thereof from MHI. Isn't it accurate to say that there is no known public evidence of scandals involving MHARR? Isn't it also accurate to say that there are signficant numbers of articles and reports, from mainstream media as well as trade news, that involve higher profile members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) as well as their senior staff in purported scandalous, possibly illegal, and predatory behavior toward rivals and consumer interests? Isn't MHI known for a lack of transparency? Link results.

There is no known public evidence of scandals involving the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR). MHARR has maintained a consistent and transparent approach in its advocacy for the manufactured housing industry.

In contrast, there are numerous articles and reports, both from mainstream media and trade news, that highlight controversies involving higher-profile members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and its senior staff. These reports often allege scandalous, potentially illegal, and predatory behavior toward rivals and consumer interests. For example:

  1. Alert: Is Affordable Housing Linked Scandal at Champion Homes Brewing?
  2. Controversy-Manufactured Housing Institute-Lesli Gooch-Mark Bowersox
  3. Attorneys Cite Blue Orca, Warn Sun Communities CEO Should Be in Prison

MHI has also faced criticism for a lack of transparency, with some industry professionals and organizations questioning its priorities and actions.

If you'd like further details or have additional questions, let me know! 😊

The screen capture below that Q&A documents its accuracy.

As regular readers of this "Reality Check" series for this Patch and at MHProNews know, for some nine years, this writer has publicly supported candidate and President Trump over his rivals. That said, it is also fair to say that when apparent or swings and misses are made, that those have been accurately reported. While articles since Trump has been sworn into office have been largely favorable from this writer, it should be noted that on the affordable housing issue, there are several potential items that need to be addressed that have not yet been publicly raised. That is part of the reason for spotlighting the need for J.D. Vance to meet J.D. Harper and Mark Weiss, J.D., along with other Trump 2.0 officials.

With respect to the NLIHC, they have not been known to publicly responded to the concerns raised by the report linked earlier in this column. If that changes, we’ll plan to report. Ditto that for MHI.

There is always more to know. See other topics that follow. Thank you for checking in again.
