Coronavirus In California: What To Know Sunday, May 10
Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of May 10.
CALIFORNIA — The best Mother's Day gift Californians can give Sunday is to not visit their moms, health officials said.
Dr. Grant Colfax, director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, told the public Wednesday that it's unwise to visit their mothers this year due to the ongoing coronavirus threat, even if they wear masks and maintain social distance.
“The greatest gift we can give to our mothers this Mother’s Day is to stay away,” Colfax said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

California to vote by mail
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Friday to mail a ballot to every registered voter in California ahead of the November general election.
With public health experts across the country predicting a second major wave of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in the run-up to the election, Newsom said he signed to order to ensure that California residents don't have to risk contracting the virus to vote.

Voting locations will still be available to accommodate those who may not be able to vote by mail, such as people with disabilities, people who speak a language other than English or people who are homeless, Newsom said.
"Elections and the right to vote are foundational to our democracy," Newsom said. "No Californian should be forced to risk their health in order to exercise their right to vote."
Stage 2 begins
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday released some details related to the reopening of many of the state's businesses, though many questions remain unanswered. And though the measures are applicable at the state level, some counties say they will continue with more strict measures.
California moved into the first new stage of its reopening plan on Friday— officially dubbed Stage 2.
The businesses able to reopen for curbside pickup include clothing stores, bookstores, music and toy stores, sporting goods stores and florists — who will be able to open in time for Mother's Day May 10, the governor pointed out. Manufacturers and other logistics companies that make up retail supply chains will also be able to reopen.
Also on Thursday, one of the state's largest county fairs, the Alameda County Fair, was canceled. It's the first time in 108 years. This is just the latest cancellation of such events due to the coronavirus.
