SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Those with an affinity for flowers who enjoy the restful and fulfilling task of picking their own in the fresh air need to discover Petersen Flower Farm in South Windsor. It truly is a hidden gem, nestled on the corner of Burgess and Foster roads (official address: 125 Burgess Road) in the center of a large square formed by Sullivan Avenue, Ellington Road, Governors Highway and Route 5.

Owners Susan and Russell Petersen offer 2 acres of pick-your-own annuals and perennials from July to September at a cost of $8 per pound. They started as a pumpkin patch, but changed to flowers in 2003. Vegetables are also available in the stand bordering Foster Road.

Most visitors like a variety of mixed flowers in their bouquets, while some look for a specific color or colors and compose their bouquets accordingly, Susan Petersen said in a past interview with Patch.

Asked about the farm's hours, Russell Petersen smiled and proclaimed, "Dawn to dusk!" It is open daily through September, and clippers and water containers are available for customer use.
