Dealmaker-In-Chief: Trump Given Room for Tariffs As Negotiation Tactic
George Washington Quote plus CNN's Harry Enten Data Remark Bring Clarity to Our Historic Moment as Trump nears his first 100 days in office.

"I hear all these stories, all these articles, 'All the Trump voters, they regret what they did back in 2024.' I'm here to tell you, 'Uh uh.' Very few of them regret what they did back in 2024." So said an X post by Jason Cohen @JasonJournoDC on 4.16.2025, under the headline: "NEW: CNN's Harry Enten DUMPS cold water on narrative that Trump voters "regret" backing him."
"So the bottom line is this: If there's some idea out there that Trump voters are going around, 'Man, I wish I had voted for Kamala Harris instead of Donald Trump.' The numbers say that is a fanciful universe. It really, for the most part, does not exist."
That CNN video clip of Harry Enten is found at this link below.

As most Americans know, George Washington was the first President of the United States (POTUS) and was a leader of the colonists in the War for Independence known as the Revolutionary War against England and its king.
Washington did not trust big government.
Find out what's happening in Lakelandfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
He and the founders studied history and they found that corruption and tyranny were common problems in government.
That doesn't mean that everyone in government is corrupt, but it means that enough are where the institutions of power should NOT automatically 'be trusted' as too many in our times want to do.
Here is a famous quote attributed to George Washington on the topic to illustrate. "Government is not reason, it is not eloquence -- it is force. Like fire, it [government] is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."

As Quote Investigator (QI) said, the "servant-master metaphors for fire and water have a long history that extends back before the birth of Washington," adding "QI would be unsurprised if future researchers locate examples before 1902 of the simile applied to “government"."
The point of the quote is that distrust of government was high, as the debate over the constitution and its checks and balances - known as the Federalist Papers - to limit federal power also illustrate.

A variety of factors over a period of decades and centuries moved the United States (U.S.) from a nation founded on the notion of limited government into one where the public were 'taught' to accept or 'trust' that government was a 'solution.' While no one person or event is responsible for that pattern, certainly an important figure in that process was Woodrow Wilson (D), which is another story for another time (or read the report linked here about the man known as a "racist progressive").
President Trump is a billionaire who lost money during his first term in office.

Trump has been called a "class traitor." We should not forget that much (not all) of big media has an agenda. That agenda is contrary to the interest of most Americans. Note that local news media, like the Patch, are often the 'most trusted' per surveys of trust in media.

Those with an 'anti-Trump' agenda are serving up a barrage of claims, slurs, and innuendo in a nearly relentless attack on the "45th and 47th President" Trump. One of the topics he's being slammed on is the issue of tariffs.
With that in mind is the following headline subject from the Daily Torch to this writer for MHProNews as today's installment of the "Reality Check" series for this Patch is Part I. More plus other topics follow in Part II.
Part I
Dealmaker-In-Chief: Conservatives Give Trump Room To Use Tariffs As A Negotiation Tactic For Better Economic Policies
By Manzanita Miller
The data is in on how voters view President Donald Trump’s bold approach to trade and economic renewal, with a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris survey showing over half the country believes tariffs are necessary to correct an imbalanced global trade landscape.
However, many voters also view President Trump’s tariff policies as a set of negotiation tactics with economic goals that go beyond the direct benefits the tariffs themselves will confer – benefits that include recouped revenue through the imposed tariffs and more competitive U.S. manufacturing.
A majority of Americans believe the tariffs Trump is imposing are a strategic negotiation tactic intended to force more favorable financial agreements across the board, and voters are giving the president a wide berth to use tariffs as leverage in these negotiations.
Americans say by seventeen points – 59 percent to 42 percent – that they believe President Trump is using tariffs as a negotiation tactic and may change them later. Republicans say Trump is using tariffs as a negotiation tactic by 32 points – 66 percent to 34 percent – and independents agree by 28 points. Democrats say by four points Trump plans to keep tariffs in place permanently, but nearly half of Democrats – 48 percent – also believe Trump is using tariffs as a negotiation tactic.
In political circles, there has been a flair up of discussion surrounding the use of tariffs as part of an overhaul to global trade that will not only renew American manufacturing and increase revenue but could also push for America First economic policies in other areas.
In an April 7th opinion piece in the New York Times, historian Jennifer Burns suggested the Trump Administration may be using tariffs as a tactic to bolster their hand in negotiations that serve the American economy beyond the boost in revenue and manufacturing through tariffs.
Likewise, in a recent episode of NPR’s Planet Money, Greg Rosalsky discussed the possibility that tariffs may be a spoke in a larger wheel of economic reforms President Trump is planning to take. These reforms could include keeping the U.S. dollar as an international reserve currency while reducing the cost to Americans that reserve-currency status currently burdens us with.
While maintaining international reserve currency status confers many benefits to Americans, it also strengthens the dollar, which arguably makes U.S. exports more expensive and makes it more difficult for American manufacturing companies to compete globally.
One of President Trump’s top economic advisors, Stephen Miran, argued in a recent speech that, “reserve function of the dollar has caused persistent currency distortions and contributed, along with other countries’ unfair barriers to trade, to unsustainable trade deficits.” Miran also stated that, “these trade deficits have decimated our manufacturing sector and many working-class families and their communities, to facilitate non-Americans trading with each other.”
According to this interpretation, a new approach to America’s role as the reserve currency to the globe may be in order, and tariffs may play an important role in negotiations by demonstrating that the United States is no longer going to be pushed around economically.
Americans who trust President Trump’s overarching vision for a renewed America First economy are giving the president room to use tariffs as one tool that could serve at least three major goals: recouping revenues through tariffs, strengthening U.S. manufacturing, and using tariffs as a negotiation tactic to demonstrate an unwillingness to allow the United States to be taken advantage of going forward.

Part II
One of the items this politically independent writer routinely checks is the left-leaning MSN news feed. There are sources that lean left and right which this writer checks in order to stay informed about what each side of the political spectrum is saying and doing.
President Trump is human. He can, has, and does make mistakes. In spiritual terms, he is 'a sinner' as are you or me. If we expect perfection, we will be disappointed. The meaning of this season for Christians is precisely the need for every soul to be saved from the slavery of sin. Trump needs saving the same as the next guy or gal.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

That said, President Trump seems to have been moved by his brush with death experience in Butler, PA in 2024.

Trump seems to grasp that God protected him for a reason. That reason is to 'save' the U.S. from falling further down the slippery path of a leftist government dominated by elitists, billionaires, and their corporate/nonprofit interests.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
As CNN's Enten noted, there is no ground swell of regret that Kamala Harris should have been elected instead of President Trump.
Trump is delivering on his promises in an array of policy moves designed to bring back manufacturing and higher paying jobs into the U.S. that were lost by decades of his predecessors. This is a process. Controlling immigration and deporting illegals can help boost wages. Bringing back manufacturing can help boost wages.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
Deporting illegals, while obviously painful to numbers of souls, is necessary if the interests of Americans is to be put above that of people from other nations. The job of good (vs bad, crony, or corrupt) government is to protect the interests and rights of their own citizens first.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
Trump said he doesn't want to see anyone hurt yet admits that it may be a bumpy ride. Better a bumpy ride back towards a better life in a healthier America that to continue to slide down the path to even more corruption in a system rigged on behalf of the small fraction of the population liked the rigged system just fine. The corruption being identified and rooted out by Team Trump is both troubling as well as hopeful for a brighter future.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
While the headline below is aspirational, Hanne Nabintu Herland is correct in saying that many in nations around the world are finding inspiration and hope in what President Trump is doing.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
Good Friday has passed this year, but is still ALWAYS relevant. A common feature from people like Miller, Herland, or others on the right is that they believe in God and believe in limited government as part of the solution rather than as part of the problem.
If you haven't read the story about Elizabeth Nickson yet or lately, please do so. She was from the left and was a rising star on the left until she 'woke up,' broke ranks and the rest is a keen part of the history of our era.

https://patch.com/florida/lake...
The reason that the American Dream has been slipping away is because the system was rigged in favor of the few.

These issues are all interlaced, even if someone may or may not see it at first. We should monitor President Trump and the MAGA movement to make sure it stays true to its driving principles. If it does, our nation will become safer and more prosperous.
