Senator John Barrasso: First US Rare Earth Minerals Mine in 70 Years Will Lessen Dependence on China
'Last week..the opening in Sheridan, WY of the Brook Mine—the first rare earth elements mine to break ground 70 years' Can Lead U.S. to More

Secretary Chris Wright said the following: "Today, I am in Wyoming for the grand opening of the Ramaco Brook Mine Carbon Ore Rare Earth project! This is a monumental step towards unleashing the full potential of American energy by utilizing the abundant resources we have right here at home. A great day for American jobs." Wright is the: "17th United States Secretary of @ENERGY" or Department of Energy (DOE). That will tee up this post from U.S. Senator John Barrasso (WY-R) on the same topic in Part I.
Part I is made available from the Daily Signal to this writer for MHProNews and this"Reality Check" series for this Patch. Added info on this topic plus other subjects follow in Part II.

First US Rare Earth Minerals Mine in 70 Years Will Lessen Dependence on China
Find out what's happening in Lakelandfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
Sen. John Barrasso | July 21, 2025
Last week on the Senate floor, I hailed the opening in Sheridan, Wyoming, of the Brook Mine—the first rare earth elements mine to break ground in the U.S. in 70 years.
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright recently joined me in Sheridan for its opening and deemed it a “landmark moment” for America’s energy independence.
Here’s what I said on the Senate floor about it:
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed into law a historic economic plan. This new law unleashes American energy—and with it, American prosperity. It makes it easier to produce oil, natural gas, and coal here at home. It opens up energy production onshore, offshore, and in Alaska. It means lower prices and more savings for the American people.
Wyoming is America’s energy breadbasket. It’s where America’s energy future begins. On Friday, Wyoming opened the first rare earth mine in America in 70 years. It’s called the Brook Mine. It is located just outside of the city of Sheridan, Wyoming.
Most Americans probably have not heard of the Brook Mine. But they are going to feel its impact. They’re going to feel what it means for prices, for jobs, and for national security. Wyoming minerals, mined by Wyoming workers, will build a safer, more prosperous America.
This mine holds over a billion tons of coal. It also holds nearly 2 million tons of critical minerals. These minerals are used to build smartphones, cars, and even fighter jets.
Wright came to Sheridan, Wyoming, for the groundbreaking ceremony. He called it “a landmark moment” for our workers, our manufacturers, and our energy independence. He’s exactly right. Today, America is dangerously dependent on China for critical minerals. China controls 85% of the world’s refined rare earth element supply. Today, China is weaponizing this power to pressure our country and threaten our supply chains.
We cannot be safe if we are dependent on our adversaries. We cannot prosper if we cannot power our country. That is why this critical mineral mine in Wyoming matters. It reflects our commitment to independence. America’s future depends on abundant energy resources. Wyoming energy resources and Wyoming energy workers will power that future.
America is an energy superpower. We have the resources. We have the workers. Now, we are acting like it.
Republicans are focused on restoring American energy dominance. We are getting America back on track—stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever. We will not stop until the American people see the results they deserve.
We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal.

Part II - Additional Facts-Evidence-Analysis (FEA) plus other topics.
1) Gemini generated the featured image for this article. On this date, left-leaning Google's AI powered Gemini was asked this question.
Okay, let me ask a question about that planned Patch article. We hear or read the term "rare earth minerals" in the news quite a bit in the last decade or so, correct? But my impression is that there are actually several places around the world that have several kinds of rare earth minerals, and that part of the challenge has been that either a society/nation may not have the financial capabilities to tap into those rare earths, or in a country like the U.S., Canada, or in Greenland, the rare earth minerals do exist, but for environmental or other reasons, they have simply not been mined, is that a fair observation supported by known evidence?
- This writer for MHProNews and this Patch notes that this how Gemini responded (below).
I understand you're asking for clarification on the common perception of "rare earth minerals" and the challenges associated with their mining outside of current dominant producers. To provide a comprehensive answer, I will formulate some search queries to gather information on the global distribution of rare earth minerals, the financial and environmental challenges of their extraction in various countries, and the reasons for historical under-mining in places like the U.S., Canada, and Greenland.
Here are the queries I'll use:
Yes, your observation is quite fair and well-supported by known evidence. Let's break down each part of your statement:
"We hear or read the term 'rare earth minerals' in the news quite a bit in the last decade or so, correct?"
Correct. The term "rare earth minerals" (more accurately, rare earth elements or REEs) has indeed gained significant prominence in news and geopolitical discussions over the last decade. This is primarily due to their critical role in modern technologies, from smartphones and electric vehicles to defense systems and renewable energy infrastructure. China's historical dominance in both mining and processing these elements has created supply chain vulnerabilities, leading other nations, including the U.S., to seek to diversify their sources.
"But my impression is that there are actually several places around the world that have several kinds of rare earth minerals..."
Absolutely correct. Rare earth elements are not actually "rare" in the Earth's crust; many are more abundant than elements like gold or silver. Deposits are found worldwide. Major reserves exist in:
- China: Still holds the largest known reserves and dominates current production.
- United States: Notably, the Mountain Pass mine in California.
- Australia: Mount Weld is a significant mine.
- Brazil and Vietnam: Have substantial reserves.
- Russia, Canada, India, South Africa, and Southeast Asia: Also possess viable ore bodies.
- Greenland: Contains significant untapped deposits.
- Deep-sea muds: Near places like Minamitori Island, Japan, also hold considerable REE concentrations, though these are not yet commercially viable for extraction.
The "rarity" comes from the fact that they rarely occur in economically concentrated forms, making their extraction and separation challenging.
"...and that part of the challenge has been that either a society/nation may not have the financial capabilities to tap into those rare earths..."
This is a significant factor. Developing a rare earth mine and, more importantly, the downstream processing facilities (which are highly complex and capital-intensive) requires enormous financial investment.
- High Upfront Costs: Exploration, infrastructure development, and advanced processing technologies are very expensive.
- Market Volatility: Rare earth prices can fluctuate significantly, making long-term investment risky. Many non-Chinese producers struggle to break even under low prices, as state-owned competitors in China may not face the same profit pressures. This can deter private investors.
- Technological Complexity: The extraction and separation processes are technically intricate, requiring specialized expertise and equipment. China has developed a significant lead in this area over decades.
"...or in a country like the U.S., Canada, or in Greenland, the rare earth minerals do exist, but for environmental or other reasons, they have simply not been mined, is that a fair observation supported by known evidence?"
This is also very fair and well-supported.
- Environmental Concerns: Rare earth mining and processing are notoriously environmentally intensive.
- Large Waste Generation: REEs are present in low concentrations, meaning huge amounts of ore must be processed, generating massive volumes of waste.
- Hazardous Materials: REEs are often found alongside radioactive elements (like thorium and uranium) and heavy metals. Their extraction uses strong acids and chemicals, leading to:
- Water Contamination: Acid mine drainage, toxic wastewater, and seepage from tailings ponds can severely pollute groundwater and surface water, affecting ecosystems and human health.
- Air Pollution: Dust, and the release of gases like hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide.
- Soil Degradation: Damage to habitats, erosion, and long-term soil contamination.
- High Energy and Water Consumption: The separation and refining processes are energy and water-intensive.
- Other Reasons (e.g., Social, Logistical, Geopolitical):
- Indigenous/Local Community Opposition: In Canada and Greenland, establishing new mines often requires meaningful consultation and agreement with Indigenous communities, who may have concerns about environmental impact on their traditional lands and livelihoods.
- Logistical Challenges: Especially in remote or Arctic regions like Greenland, the harsh climate, lack of infrastructure (roads, ports), and high operational costs significantly increase the difficulty and expense of mining.
- Historical Economic Shifts: In the U.S., domestic production declined as China ramped up its output with lower costs and less stringent environmental oversight, making it cheaper to import than to mine domestically.
In summary, the narrative surrounding rare earth minerals is indeed complex. While they are globally distributed, a combination of significant financial hurdles, stringent environmental regulations (and the associated costs of compliance), and other logistical and social factors have historically deterred their widespread extraction and processing outside of China, leading to the current global supply chain imbalance. The opening of the Brook Mine in Wyoming signifies a strategic effort to overcome these challenges and rebuild a domestic supply chain for these critical materials.

That is NOT to say that this writer is an 'expert' on the "rare earth minerals" or rare earth elements (REE) topic. It is to say that if someone reports on something enough, simple and often reliable observations can emerge.
Gemini confirmed that the observations noted were accurate and supported by a range of evidence.
3) Google (which is the 'parent,' so to speak, of Gemini) has been described as left-leaning.

4) Copilot recently suggested to this writer in a different thread (topic) that when dealing with a source like Google that has a left leaning bias, it is useful to share information from the right to help counter that bias. Be that as it may, in the experience of this writer what may in some cases make as much or more sense is to share a view from someone or source that is from the same political bent and show how they disagree with some view that is largely shares their worldview. Meaning, share a person or source that is from the left with another source from the left, but that contradicts with reason the 'preferred' or biased view.
5) An example will help.
Michael Moore is widely seen as a progressive and from the political left. The left-leaning YouTube page the video above is from says this.
"Michael Moore Presents: Planet of the Humans | A Film by Jeff Gibbs | Full Documentary
Michael Moore presents a film by Jeff Gibbs, Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will — that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road — selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It's too little, too late."
In essence, one of the takeaways from Planet of the Humans is that there is quite a bit of hypocrisy on this topic. Even if one doesn't accept the conclusion that climate change may be largely cyclical that has been occurring on the earth for tens to hundreds of thousands of years, to mine rare earth minerals in China, or parts of Africa (etc.) were environmental, labor, or regulatory standards are lax - or just cheaper - is a kind of text book case of hypocrisy.
6) That hypocrisy has arguably harmed tens of millions of Americans. People who lost 'good paying jobs' to other nations that can do something similar for less. That is a tragedy that needs to be exposed on a regular basis because it has cost our nation and its people trillions of dollars benefit a fairly limited group of people and corporate interests, all while harming the working class and middle class Americans that wealthy and connected leftists often claim they care about.

7) Science is about testing ideas to see if they are true, somewhat true, or entirely false (depending). Ideas once thought to be true in science or medicine later turned out to be incorrect.
If we are honest with each other, and that is part of my goal in this series - to share candid, factual, and honest insights and information - odds are excellent that we have all been 'fooled' or mistaken on this or that topic, person, whatever.
Yours truly freely admits that there are times I thought some person, business, or nonprofit (for generic examples) was 'good' and only later did it turn out that yours truly was mistaken. Some people, some organizations, are just good at hiding who or what they are.

8) If you can learn something useful from moi and these "Reality Check" series for this Patch then good for you. Pass it on.
There is always more to known and learn on an array of topics from political, economic, religious, cultural, housing, tech, truth-detecting and more via this "Reality Check" series for this Patch and in on our deeper dive reports on MHProNews and MHLivingNews. Thanks for checking in.

Postscript. After publishing the above, Gemini was asked to fact check it for accuracy and fidelity to the sources, for logical presentation that is supported by the evidence, etc. See the links here and here.
Gemini near the end of that item found here is the following remarks. Quoting:
- "Overall Sourcing: The article includes an extensive list of hyperlinked sources at the end. These sources come from various reputable organizations, including academic journals (Taylor & Francis Online, MDPI), think tanks (CSIS, Institute for Policy Studies, Belfer Center), government agencies (USGS, Texas Comptroller), news/analysis sites (NASA Earth Observatory, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, Innovation News Network, Cipher News, Columbia University Climate News, Foreign Policy in Focus), and encyclopedias (Britannica). The inclusion of such a broad range of sources indicates a strong effort to base the article's claims on evidence rather than mere opinion.
In conclusion, the article appears to be a well-researched piece that accurately incorporates our discussion, credits my contribution, and supports its other claims with a robust list of external sources. It presents a logical and evidence-based position on the topic of rare earth minerals and U.S. independence."
