CONCORD, NH — Two were hurt on Monday night after a tractor-trailer truck collided with a railroad plow in Groveton, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Around 6 p.m., troopers were sent to a crash on Route 3 near Mile Marker 173. According to Tyler Dumont, a public information officer for state police, both vehicles were damaged heavily.

A preliminary investigation determined the railroad plow driver stopped when the plow became stuck in the middle of Route 3. A driver in a tractor-trailer loaded with lumber was traveling south when he struck the railroad plow head-on. The tractor-trailer lost some of its lumber and the wood scattering across Route 3.

“The road was closed for multiple hours while the lumber was cleaned up,” Dumont said.

“Troopers have determined the railroad crossing warning signs were not actively flashing after the railroad plow became stuck,” Dumont said. “The railroad plow had a single amber light on its roof, which was flashing and active at the time.”

Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Lancaster Police Department, the New Hampshire

Department of Transportation, the Northumberland police and fire departments, and the Groveton Ambulance.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that would assist the investigation is asked to contact

Trooper Hunter Newsham at 603-846-3333 or hunter.p.newsham@dos.nh.gov.

Meredith Man Accused Of Wrong-Way Driving

A Lakes Region man was arrested Feb. 12 and accused of wrong-way driving under the influence on Interstate 93 in Ashland.

Around 9:30 p.m., troopers received reports of a car driving south in the northbound lane of the highway. The driver of the car, a Toyota Corolla, was accused of driving “at a high rate of speed” in Ashland.

“To prevent additional danger to the public, Ttoopers farther south formed a rolling roadblock to stop traffic on the Interstate,” Dumont said. “The driver of the Toyota then stopped in front of the troopers, where he was taken into custody.”

The driver, William Heffron Jr., 55, of Meredith, was accused of showing signs of impairment and he had an active Laconia police warrant. He was arrested and charged with nine felony counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, aggravated driving under the influence, and reckless driving. Heffron was held on preventative detention at the Grafton County Jail.

Members of the Ashland and Holderness police departments assisted troopers.

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper David Carlson at 603-223-3787.
