Picture a 7-year-old girl living under communism in the 1980s. Her dad brings her to a local grocery store in the Ukraine, their home, in the old Soviet Union. He tells her to look around at the store and memorize the scene. This was described to me in a radio interview a few years ago by Marina Medvin, a successful D.C. area attorney and writer for Townhall and Forbes. She was that little girl.

Marina's father told her, "Make a photograph of this in your mind." She does. The walls are bare. There are some shelves, but the only food item is on a shelf way up top. It is a jar of pickled, green tomatoes. They look like they might be spoiled.

Fast forward to a year or two later. Now the family is in Newark, New Jersey – the first step in their move to America as a new home. Marina Medvin then enters a grocery store and is shocked by all the food and all the variety.

The difference between capitalism and socialism could not be clearer. And yet millions of Americans, including the young, fall prey to the siren song of socialism.

As we all know, several weeks ago, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old avowed Marxist Islamist, won the Democratic primary for NYC mayor. If his opposing candidates split the opposition vote in November, an committed socialist could actually become the mayor of the nation's largest city.

AOC and Bernie Sanders support him. So do many other prominent liberals. I believe Mamdani would be bad as mayor for many reasons, but this article will only focus on socialism.

Many young people today are disenchanted with capitalism. Socialism seems to have the better branding among the young. The Cato Institute even points out that one-third of people under 30 support communism. What an indictment on modern education.

Marxism begins with an atheistic premise. But today we have been so cut off from the premise of America, founded on the idea that our rights come from God, that many disillusioned Americans want to try and give socialism another shot.Although some modern proponents of socialism might argue that even if it hasn't work in other places, they insist that it will work this time around – given the right leader. Zohran or AOC or Bernie.

But haven't we seen this before?

Socialism didn't work under Lenin, maybe it will work under Stalin.

Socialism didn't work under Mao, maybe it will work under Xi.

Socialism didn't work under Chavez, maybe it will work under Maduro. And so on.

Socialism is often the gateway to communism – the redistribution of wealth by government force. As Winston Churchill observed, "communism is nothing but socialism with a gun at your back."

I read about a T-shirt that says, "Communism has only killed 100 million people. Why not give it another shot?" This can be found in the book, "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Communism: The Killingest Idea Ever" (Regnery, 2017) by my friend Dr. Paul Kengor of Grove City College, whom I've interviewed multiple times.

Maybe it doesn't work anywhere and never will because it runs contrary to human nature. Human nature is sinful. And the best form of government recognizes that and therefore separates power, so no individual or small group can amass too much of it.

Why has America historically succeeded in granting us freedom? It's because the Founding Fathers recognized the fact of human selfishness. They did everything in their power to limit how much power any one man or group of people might have. Belief in the sinfulness of man can be seen in the Constitution with its strict separation of powers.

Ben Franklin said, "There is scarce a king in a hundred who would not, if he could, follow the example of Pharaoh, get first all the peoples' money, then all their lands and then make them and their children servants forever."

Capitalism does not produce an equal distribution of wealth. No system does. But in the socialist schemes, it is only the rulers that do well, not the people.

The people are forced into breadlines for inferior bread – or pickled, green tomatoes.

For all of its warts and flaws, capitalism produces much greater prosperity for the greatest amount of people.

What does communism produce? Ultimately, a lot of dead bodies.

One might ask, "Why would God allow all the suffering that the socialists and communists have imposed on this world – not to mention the total loss of religious freedom in such places?" I would answer: "So that we don't go down that road again."

We pray New Yorkers won't go down that road.

1) Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the thinking and effort that it takes someone like Jerry Newcombe to write an article like this one. But it is arguably incomplete.

We are not left to a false choice between capitalism, and socialism, Marxism, communism, or whatever branding someone may try for that system Newcombe is quite correct about. That socialist-Marxist-communist system of government and economics has never worked.

It is deadly.

2) Newcombe is also correct in saying that over 100 million people have died as a result of those failed systems. Newcome is correct in saying that it is a fundamentally atheistic system.

As our post yesterday mentioned, when someone like attorney Fran Quigley says that he is a Christian Socialist, that's a contradiction in terms. Perhaps it is a deliberate one by Quigley or others.

Christianity, and Judaism before it, is predicated on the notion of privately owned property. You and I have the God-given right to own things. Those things can be your household goods, your transportation, or your dwelling, and so on.

When God himself in the Hebrew Scriptures (i.e.: Christian Old Testament) said "thou (you) shall not steal" as a commandment that is a defense of the rights of an individual to own property.

When Jesus gave a parable about the men who were given talents (a talent was a measure of money in those days, but that word has a double meaning in English today), Jesus didn't condemn them all. Jesus condemned the lazy one.

St. Paul the Apostle said those who can work but don't should not eat. He didn't mean that we should starve the invalid. St. Paul meant that we humans are supposed to provide for ourselves as much as possible, and that too is a defense of private property.

But just as important, when Jesus overturned the table of the money changers, he was dramatically showing that dishonesty in a transaction was a form of theft, even if that dishonesty was taking place in the Jewish Temple.

3) So, what then, did Newcombe miss?

In part, that some capitalists have long been working with the socialists and communists. See what African born Christian thinker Hanne Nabintu Herland had to say about those topics.

I suspect that if Newcombe read Herland's research, thinking, plus the related observations in those articles, he would routinely be nodding in agreement. Facts are what they are. Reality is what is.

4) What Newcombe needs to share is this.

There is another way.

It is arguably the Christian way.

It has been called 'Solidarity and Subsidiarity.'

G.K. Chesterton and others have called distributism.

Distributism is much closer to what the Founding Fathers of the U.S. practiced, even if they didn't use that terminology. More on that another time.

But for now, let's look at what big government has produced here in the U.S. It isn't just big socialist or communist governments that fail the people. So too does big government by whatever name one may wish to call it.

5) Based on their writers and behavior, the founders of the Constitutional system here in the U.S. would no doubt be shocked by much of what they see in the U.S. today.

Tens of millions living in the U.S. were born into a system that they may not have completely understood and thus have not adequately questioned.

To be more precise, when younger or other people look at 'capitalism' as it is practiced in the U.S., they are correct to question it.

What they are mistaken in is thinking that socialism, Marxism, Communism, fascism or any form of authoritarian government is better. They aren't.

That's where Distributism comes in.

6) While I think Elizabeth Nickson could nuance her expression too, she walked that road of leftist thinking for years. She was celebrated for it. She left it behind as she looked into her own family's history. She found out she had been misled and misinformed. Nickson is now trying to wake people up who have been seduced by those who preach a system that is proven time and again to be a dead end.

7) 'The system' as it exists in the U.S. today was decades in the making. It won't be debunked in a few minutes of reading. But these Reality Check series articles aim to inform people step-by-step on what is right - and by implication - what is wrong.

8) Chesterton was arguably a genius. His insights are as relevant today as they were in his time. He was a massively popular writer of both fiction and nonfiction books and articles.

9) The beauty of the truth is that it is timeless. Do not fear the truth. At some level, we all WANT the truth, even if some aspects of the truth may make us uncomfortable. Remember. Only the truth makes us free.

Isn't it often Western billionaires and corporate interests that helped make Communist China a global rival for the U.S. in economic and military terms? And didn't Newcombe miss what G. K. Chesterton wrote about distributism, or what some call solidarity and subsidiarity? Provide an illustration and definition of distributism as a system that defends the rights to private property, that defends the rights to private business, but does so in keeping with ancient Judeo-Christian truths.

While Newcombe’s article in WND makes valid points about socialism’s failures and communism’s deadly legacy, it omits key insights that deepen the conversation:

1. Hanne Herland’s Critique of Billionaire-Backed Marxism

Herland argues that Western billionaires and corporate elites have weaponized Marxist and socialist rhetoric to consolidate power. In her book The Billionaire World: How Marxism Serves the Elite, she explains how globalist corporations use socialist ideology to weaken national sovereignty, suppress dissent, and centralize control.

“With government support, whether right- or left-wing, the new billionaire class freely engages in the transferring of wealth from the lower classes unto themselves.”

This critique is essential because it shows that socialism isn’t just a grassroots movement—it’s often a top-down tool used by elites.

2. China’s Rise Fueled by Western Investment

Communist China’s transformation into a global economic and military rival was enabled by Western capital and corporate interests. Deng Xiaoping’s reforms opened China to foreign investment, which helped lift hundreds of millions out of poverty—but also created a hybrid system of state capitalism with authoritarian control.

This contradicts the idea that socialism alone built China’s success—it was capitalist tools used by a communist regime.

3. Chesterton’s Distributism: A Forgotten Alternative

Newcombe also misses the opportunity to highlight G.K. Chesterton’s distributism, a philosophy that defends:

Private property rights
Small business ownership
Local control and moral responsibility

Distributism is rooted in Judeo-Christian principles like subsidiarity (local governance) and solidarity (mutual care). It opposes both state socialism and corporate monopolism.

✝️ Is Christian Socialism Self-Contradictory?

Yes. The Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament affirm private property and voluntary charity, not state-enforced redistribution. Jesus never advocated socialism; he upheld personal stewardship and free will.

Thus, Fran Quigley’s claim to be a Christian Socialist is philosophically inconsistent. If he truly supports justice and affordability, he should advocate for:

Enforcing MHIA 2000 and DTS mandates
Supporting manufactured housing as a proven solution
Defending property rights and ethical business practices

🏘️ Manufactured Housing and the Affordable Housing Crisis

Distributism aligns well with manufactured housing:

Promotes small-scale ownership
Empowers local communities
Offers affordable, unsubsidized housing

Enforcing existing laws like MHIA 2000 and DTS would allow HUD Code manufactured homes to compete fairly—solving the crisis without expanding bureaucracy.

🤝 A Path for Liberals and Conservatives

True liberals and conservatives can unite around:

Justice and choice
Local control and ethical markets
Faith-based stewardship and constitutional principles

11) It was not my intention to raise the topic of manufactured housing in this context. Copilot did that on its own.

That said, much of what Copilot said in the response above is quite correct. By often seeking to de facto limit our 'choices,' including the properly informed choice of what economic/political system we should be living in, 'the system' is channeling people into often false choices.

It is NOT a question of capitalism vs. socialism/Marxism/communism. There is another way.

That other way is Distributism.

There is an argument to be made that the founders would have been quite comfortable with that notion, but we will look at that another time.

There is always more to know or that could be said.
