Rev Emanuel Akalue - What is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary? A Biblical Homily

"[Our souls] the souls of the just… [will be] in the hands of God" (Wis 3; cf. Rev 6:9; 20:4)-at the resurrection our bodies will be raised.

Catholic views on Mary were commonly held by the early Protestants as we previously explored at this link here. Our family met the Rev. (Father) Emanuel Akalue when we lived in Kissimmee, FL. We shared several meals and became friends. While we each moved in different directions, we have stayed in touch. Father Emanuel has had a radio show for years. He can correctly be called a Scripture scholar. His knowledge of the Bible is nothing short of impressive. He has given me written persmission to share his emailed homily, shown below.

Millions have little or no clue about the highly Scriptural nature of the Mass, nor the Biblical basis for many Catholic teachings. Perhaps one of the better ways to discover the truth of those remarks is to read this sermon and then see the Scripture readings for today's Mass.

Homily - Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (by Fr. Emmanuel Akalue)

On this Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we share this message – “The Assumption of Mary – Awesome prefiguration of our final glory!” Beloved, the Assumption means that after the end of her earthly life, Mary was immediately taken by God, body and soul, into heaven. Concerning Jesus, we speak of Ascension (meaning, He went up into heaven by His own power); but in the case of Mary (and the rest of us), we speak of assumption (meaning, God carries us into heaven; we cannot get there on our own). Thus, from Mary’s assumption, our hope of future glory is vividly assured. Our bodies may not be assumed immediately when we die; nevertheless, “[Our souls] the souls of the just… [will be] in the hands of God” (Wis 3; cf. Rev 6:9; 20:4) and at the resurrection, our bodies will be raised and reunited with our souls.

Some non-Catholic Christians do not yet understand this truth. But God already gave us some insights: Scripture says, Elijah “went up [body/soul] by a whirlwind into heaven” (2Kgs 2:11); Enoch “was taken [body/soul] by God” (cf. Gen 5:24; Heb 11:5) and “He [the Lord] buried Moses” (Deut 34:6-7; cf. Jude 1:9). These simply imply God preserved them “somewhere” since no one entered heaven before Christ’s Death and Resurrection (cf. Matt 27:50-53). Jesus is “firstborn from the dead” (Col 1:18; Rev 1:5; cf. 1Cor 15:23). Our Second Reading (1Cor 15:20-27) clearly says, “For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order.” Mary is already raised, already assumed into heaven according to the ‘proper order’ of primacy granted to her above all humanity. All of us will eventually experience resurrection and assumption, at least on the Last Day (cf. John 6:40, 54).

Beloved, to dispute the Assumption of Mary is an absolute failure to understand the rapport between Mary and Jesus, the sinless Second Eve and the sinless Second Adam promised by God (cf. Gen 3:15; 1Cor 15:45; Rev 12). Mary received special privileges from this relationship. Scripture shows: She is the only woman God exempted from every stain of sin (“I will put enmity between you and the Devil [the architect of sin]” (Gen 3:15); the only woman through whom the Son of God took flesh and was born; and the only woman “yesterday, today and forever” who conceived without any man. Indeed, as Mary herself declared, “He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name” (Luke 1:49).

The First Reading (Rev 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10) declares, “God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.” Certainly, John the beloved disciple was not referring to the “wooden box ark” of the Old Testament. He was speaking about the New Covenant Ark in glory; about Mary who carried Jesus – the New Covenant – inside her body; just as the wooden ark contained items of the Old Covenant. Notice, John proceeded to portray Mary’s Assumption in the same language of the transfiguration of Jesus: “A woman clothed with the sun… and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” To be clothed with the sun simply means her natural body has been transfigured supernaturally, her mortal body has put on immortality (cf. 1Cor 15:51-53); just as Jesus transfigured Himself to show us His real supernatural life and glory: “his face shone like the sun” (Matt 17:2).

Think about it: Remember, Christ is the Perfect Teacher and Perfect Keeper of His Father’s Will: “Honor your father and your mother” (Deut 5:16; Eph 6:2). Jesus teaches us by example and we are commanded to follow his footsteps (cf. 1Pet 2:21). If you were Jesus – the Son of the Most High God, the Alpha and Omega, the Resurrection and the Life, one to whom nothing is impossible (cf. Luke 1:37) – how would you honor your mother? Where would you leave your mother’s body? In the grave? To become food for worms and termites? Certainly, Jesus did not abandon His Mother in the grave! At the end of her earthly life, she was immediately taken, body and soul, into heaven. May God increase our faith that all may understand and celebrate this mystery joyfully, through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Part III - Additional Information, plus other topics.

I reflect from time to time on one day when I was still in junior high school. It was Norman, Oklahoma. I was riding on my bike. I was entering an intersection on the way to school when it hit me. There were four different churches on that intersection. One on each corner. Is that what God had in mind?

Here is what Jesus said (John 17:21). I've added the bold, but the text is as shown.

20 “I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom thou hast given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy love for me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world has not known thee, but I have known thee; and these know that thou hast sent me. 26 I made known to them thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Jesus repeatedly said, that his followers 'be as one' so that "so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

There was no notion in that of some fuzzy notion that everyone could believe whatever they want to, is there? Instead, we see Jesus calling for unity among believers.

God gives us free will. We don't have to believe. We don't have to follow. We don't have to do what Jesus wanted.

But if we think of ourselves as Christians, if we want to give imperfect but still sincere witness to what Jesus taught, then clearly Jesus called for unity among believers.

Hundreds of ex-pastors from different Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds have made the spiritual journey into the Catholic faith. It isn't that Catholics are perfect, no believer is. But the Catholic Church was given the fullness of truth.

The Lord knew what we needed, and Jesus left us with a Church.

Think about those words from Jesus' mother Mary, provided above in the USCCB readings.

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:the Almighty has done great things for meand holy is his Name." Does your church teach that Mary is blessed? Does your church teach that "all generations will call" her blessed?

Remember. Mary is no demi-goddess. She is human. But God gave her a special grace to be the mother of the Savior. Praise God, and let's call her "blessed" together!
