Joshua S. Colby, 27, a homeless man now located in Concord, was arrested at 12:57 p.m. on June 30 on three theft by unauthorized taking-less than $1,000 charges. An officer was sent to the Market Basket at 108 Fort Eddy Road for a report of a shoplifter in custody. When they arrived, Colby was “being held on the ground” by the store manager and a Good Samaritan, an affidavit stated. Colby agreed to cooperate, complained about chest pain, was given an ice pack, and Concord fire and rescue teams were requested, the report said. The store manager accused Colby of putting merchandise in his backpack, going to a register to pay for a bottle of water, and leaving the store, failing to pay for the other items. The store manager attempted to stop Colby from leaving but he attempted to flee, the report said. The employee grabbed him by the backpack, he fell to the ground, and was held until police arrived, the officer wrote. A check found two active warrants for Colby from May on other theft charges. Inside his backpack were batteries, Dude wipes, Pop Tarts, butane fluid, fruit punch, and other items, all valued at around $35, an affidavit said. Colby refused bail and was taken to the Merrimack County Jail. According to affidavits, one warrant involved $35 worth of items stolen from the Hannaford supermarket on Fort Eddy Road, including a wrap, candy, a Klondike Bar, and drinks on April 24. The second warrant involved a $60 tent stolen from Target on D’Amante Drive on May 8, according to a report.
