Forget Left and Right For a Few Minutes - Why Faith Leadership Could Bridge Gaps and Fix the 'Rigged System'

There is an amazing array of people in the U.S. that span political, cultural, and religious spectrums. We often hear about the 'left-right' divide but that can be overly simplistic because there are the rich, poor, and in between. There are whites that are of European backgrounds, plus people of African, Hispanic, Asian, indigenous (Native Americans/American Indians), and others from places that circle the globe. Christianity is dominant in the U.S., but there are also Muslim, Jewish, and various Eastern religious groups, not to mention atheists and agnostics. It has to be periodically stressed. "Divide and conquer" is a tactic nearly as old as human history.

This quote collage below reflects an interesting truth. Namely, some moral principles span religious divisions.

Many, not all, religions have a devilish type evil figure. For example, adapted from Gemini.

• Christianity: The Devil, also known as Satan, is depicted as a fallen angel who rebelled against God and actively works against humanity's salvation.
  • Islam: Iblis, similar to Satan, is a significant figure, though there are distinctions from the Christian understanding.
  • Judaism: has Satan, Samael, Belial, and Azazel.
  • Zoroastrianism: This ancient Persian religion features a dualistic view of the world, with a prominent evil spirit, Angra Mainyu (or Ahriman), opposing the benevolent god, Ahura Mazda.

Let's note that this is NOT meant to make all religion seem to be 'the same.' They are not. Various faiths are distinctive.

That said, this fairly common notion of an evil spirit, who in the Christian world-view is a powerful fallen angel that leads other fallen angels, often is portrayed as tempting people to do thing contrary to God’s will and doing so in a manner that divides people.

Divisive individuals in the church: The New Testament, particularly in Paul's letters, urges believers to watch out for those who cause divisions and obstacles contrary to sound teaching."

It is important for faith leaders to seek the truth themselves and then to share that truth as effectively as possible with others.

Frankly, I'm not sure if I've every heard of this fellow before, but he does a good job of presenting three reasons why people should believe in God.

Professor Zigarelli ends by saying no question (not subject) can be more important. Quite so.

We've considered before evidence for the existence of God in this series. But it should be amplified that faith-leaders are in a unique position to bridge the gaps that divide our society.

It should also be noted that divide and conquer is a common tactic. It is not necessary for this or that group to win over everyone in political, social, or economic realms. It is 'enough' for some to get a large body of people that think as they wish.

We've shared in this series before that roughly 70 percent of the population believes that the system is rigged.

But if faith leaders were doing a better job (not a slam, just an evidence-based observation) of showing people the importance of spiritual truths in life a natural consequence would be less division and more unity.

Let me address one more point before wrapping up. It has been said that the best argument against Christianity is Christians. It is a clever claim. Something similar could be said about other religions too. But it is a strawman argument. The straw man is a logical fallacy. It is a claim that appears to be make sense, but similar to a 'strawman' in the cornfield that is meant to scare off the crows, the straw man when carefully considered is revealed to be false.

Christianity doesn't claim that Christians are perfect. Nor do most other religions, for that matter. That is what makes the argument that the 'best argument against Christianity is Christians' a strawman argument.

Humanity has its weaknesses. Like a drug addict or alcoholic has to admit that they have a problem before they can overcome it, we humans must admit that we are imperfect and we need the help of our Creator/God who is also our Savior.
