STAFFORD, CT — The second Hidden Gem of 2023 measures more than 7,000 acres, but travelers have been known to whiz by various entrances because it is tucked into the undulating countryside of northeastern Connecticut.

Welcome to Shenipsit State Forest, located in parts of Stafford, Somers and Ellington.

The state forest designation can be traced to 1927 and the acquisition of land at the summit of Soapstone Mountain in Somers in order to put up a fire tower. Over time, additional acreage was added to form the 7,078-acre state forest we know today.

Recreational opportunities abound at Shenipsit State Forest, with the primary attractions being hiking and just taking in the views. The Shenipsit Trail passes over Soapstone Mountain. Though the original fire tower is long gone, today's tower is open to the public for recreational viewing. It's one of just two observation towers in Eastern Connecticut and the views stretch from the Connecticut River Valley to the Springfield skyline.

The park is also home to Connecticut’s museum of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's plan to combine environmental conservation work with finding work for the large number of unemployed young men during the Great Depression.
