Meanwhile, when the details are considered, their behavior during a well documented affordable housing crisis raises legal and ethical questions for affordable housing seekers or advocates, policymakers, solution-oriented public officials, 'retail' investors and taxpayers alike.
The first report dives into Frank Rolfe's 2022 blog post critiquing the late Sam Zell's Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS) acquisition of key manufactured home industry platforms like Datacomp, MHVillage, and MHInsider. Rolfe, himself an MHI member, warns of "spin" in data and narratives, potentially enabling rent hikes and market control. MHProNews ties in Sun Communities CEO Gary Shiffman's related remarks. The report uncovers nearly $1 million in annual compensation for MHI's Mark Bowersox ($497,134) and Lesli Gooch ($491,541) reported via their 2023 IRS Form 990—payoffs amid stagnant MH production (just 89,000 units in 2023 vs. 373,000 in 1998).
Antitrust suits against MHI-linked firms allege price-fixing, costing consumers, taxpayers and others billions.

Investors in many (not all) publicly traded MHI member firms have all but said in their own words that they are each supporting the other, despite the fact that there could be higher profits earned by doing more developing.
MHI member UMH Properties stand alone among their REITs in saying there should be MORE developing on a BIG scale.
As a disclosure, this writer has not invested in other MHI-linked industry stocks, but has in UMH. Why? Because they aren't being sued by their residents for price-rigging and antitrust violations, as so many other MHI member-firms are.
Cavco Industries (CVCO) and Champion Homes (SKY) are among those who have come out and publicly said that they support the business practices of communities, many of which have been sued by their residents for price fixing and evidence-based antitrust violations.

To be clear, UMH isn't perfect in this writer's view, because they should logically break completely from MHI. Their support for MHI runs counter to their interests. The UMH stock might rise rapidly and attract more ethically minded investors if they broke with MHI.

The bottom line for this post is simple. There needs to be state and federal level investigations. Voters and citizens should contact their lawmakers (local, state, and federal) and ask for an enforcement of existing laws.
Enforcing existing laws is the fastest path to fixing the affordable housing crisis. Many other moves are smokescreens designed to deflect from the solutions that were passed by Congress in 2008 and 2000. It is shocking that these laws have not been properly enforced, but the evidence is clear.
