Pew Research: 'U.S. Immigrant Population Declines for First Time in Nearly 60 Years'

The polling is interesting. But how does immigration policy, particularly illegal immigration, impact the lives of you and those you love?

Let's be clear. This writer is the son of legal immigrants. My wife came to the U.S. legally. Several of our friends are immigrants. There is a common-sense difference between legal and illegal immigration. The presence of millions of illegal immigrants is in several respects pragmatic issues and questions. When there are more illegal immigrants, that means they are competing for housing, for jobs, for social benefits (rightly or wrongly), for education, and a range of products and services.

But this isn't about polls or what is or isn't popular. This ought to be about why immigration laws exist in the first place. It is about why nation's have borders and why most countries seek to control immigration and their borders. There are health, safety, economic, and other practical reasons to enforce existing laws on immigration. Yes, some costs may go up as a result. But yes, that will also end up meaning native born and legal immigrant employees will have the opportunity to earn more money. That's the law of supply and demand in action. Who says? University researchers, among others.

Pew: U.S. immigrant population declines for first time in nearly 60 years

The U.S.’s foreign-born population shrunk this year for the first time since the 1960s, new data released Thursday from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found.

After rapidly growing for more than 50 years, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. reached a record high of 53.3 million in January 2025. The following months showed a decline of nearly 1.5 million, a likely mark of President Donald Trump’s second-term immigration policies.

The new Pew study shows that more people are leaving the U.S. than are entering it, the first time this has happened in more than half a century.

The analysis also found that the number of noncitizens in the U.S. illegally reached a record high of 14 million in 2023, a trend which Trump routinely drew on while campaigning against his opponents in the 2024 presidential race, first former President Joe Biden and then former Vice President Kamala Harris.

A nationwide crackdown on immigration has been a central part of Trump’s second-term policy agenda. He has signed 181 executive orders relating to immigration since returning to the White House in January. The administration has implemented its immigration policies through mass deportations of noncitizens, incentivising self deportations, heightened security at the U.S.’s southwestern border and by toughening up student visa requirements.

These policies were reflected in Pew’s data, which found that the percent of the U.S. population made up of immigrants shrunk to 15.4% in June from 15.8% in January.

Immigrants, both lawful and unlawful, make up a sizable portion of the U.S. workforce. Pew’s report shows that the U.S. lost more than 750,000 workers since January with the percent of immigrants in the workforce declining from 20% to 19% in six months.

Economists say the strain a declining workforce will have on the U.S. economy is contingent on the scope of Trump’s immigration policies during the latter half of his second term. If current trends continue, the U.S. is likely to face economic challenges stemming from the significant decline in workers.

1) Let's be clear. There are going to be economists and other experts willing to say that removing or encouraging the self-deportation of illegal immigrants is somehow going to hurt the U.S. Some are willing to say or do whatever if they think it will serve their political or other agendas.

2) That said, this flashback article to 2024 speaks volumes. Wall Street - meaning, big corporate interests - believed less immigration and deportations would raise the wages and earnings of Americans. It is common sense.

Whatever Alice M. Carter's politics may be, her take on this topic (see articles linked above) were either a failure of independent thought, or perhaps she was pushing an agenda. Whatever her thinking was, she was mistaken.

Just watch as the hard data, not the agenda-driven claims, begins to come in.

4) Millions of Americans have delayed marriage or buying their first home. The first job of a good country ought to be to safeguard the interests of their own citizens.

5) Democrats, 'Democratic Socialists' and often Democratic appointed judges have routinely been fighting this effort. That's not a political statement, I'm an independent. It is a statement of objective reality being observed and stated for what it is.

6) In order to move our country ahead for the vast majority of Americans, people have to be willing to speak the truth and share the truth. There are good reasons why the term "Establishment Democrats" and "Establishment" Republicans exist. Right now, there is a tug of war within the Republican Party for which direction that party will go, post President Trump. In the Democratic Party, the tug of war is a bit different. There are those who want to push Democrats still further to the left into socialism. Here is the dirty little secret socialists don't tell you. Socialist, Marxist, and Communist policies do not work.
