ENFIELD, CT — On a daily basis, tens of thousands of vehicles pass the sprawling operation of Smyth's Trinity Farm, either on Interstate 91 or Route 5. Most drivers have no clue of the true gem they are near: a fourth-generation family farm encompassing 20 acres at the southern tip of the Enfield Historic District. It is one of the few remaining farms in northern Connecticut whose products are still made on-site in their dairy processing plant, and are sold in a charming little store on the premises.

Founded in 1912 on Hazard Avenue, the farm moved to its current site at 4 Oliver Road in 1984. The two most unique features of the Smyth’s product line – characteristics of a bygone era – are the old-style glass bottles they use, and home delivery.

Glass bottles preserve the taste of the milk, keep the milk colder than plastic does, and are returned to the farm and reused. The Smyths began home delivery when the local farm-to-table movement gained support in the area, and currently bring goods to customers on a weekly basis in Enfield, Windsor Locks, Ellington, Suffield, Somers and Longmeadow, Mass.

In the farm store, customers may buy whole, 1 percent and skim milk, along with heavy cream, half and half, chocolate, coffee and strawberry milk, butter, yogurts of various flavors and kefir (a creamy, fermented milk drink).
