Decades ago, there was a hit song: Alfie. Some of the lyrics asked rhetorical but important questions.

'What's it all about, Alfie?' 'Is it just for the moment that we live?'

Hold those thoughts.

Dave Durand in a consultant and speaker. Durand is currently the CEO of Leading Giants and Executive Chairman of Best Version Media, an international media company located in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Durand was recently saying in an interview on Relevant Radio that some people don't care if they are right or wrong on some issue.

'I've got my video games. I'm good.'

That same pattern Durand mentioned plays out in several ways. Some other examples.

'I've got my social media. I'm good.'
Or 'I've got my porn, I'm good.'
'I've got my drugs, alcohol, comfort food, I'm good.'
'I've got my streaming system; I can binge watch TV. I'm good.'

Various distractions or addictions are a symptom of the deeper problem.

Various conflicts and wars are a symptom of the problem.

Democrats vs. Republicans. They too are a mere symptom of the REAL problem.

What is the root cause of division? Division within a person? Within a soul? Division between couples? Splits within a family? Splits between believers? Division between agnostics and athiests? Division in a nation or between countries?

It can be summed up in a few words that strike near the heart of the true meaning and purpose of life and what goes wrong when we stray from that meaning and purpose.

Good vs. Evil.

We may know, or be, someone who has no religious belief whatsoever. Yet, EVERYONE knows that there is such a thing as Good and Evil.

They may not define it exactly the same way, yet the belief in Good vs. Evil are universal. Two words with one abbreviation.

Or three words: Good and Evil. Either way, 13 characters.

Let's dig deeper.

There is something else that is universal. Go to any place on earth. You can easily find people who want these things.

Truth. Love. Hope.

Even if we have told some half-truth or lie ourselves, on any serious topic, not many people want to be lied to, right? How did you feel that last time you realized that you had been, or were being, decieved?

Odds are, you didn't like it. Why?

Because there is a universal desire for truth.

Perhaps some mentally ill or substance-abuse addled soul may think they don't care about truth. But even those deeply troubled souls may be seeking escape from some truth that they simply don't know how or want to properly cope with.

Why am I here?

What is the meaning of my life?

What is the purpose of my life?

Am I a mere animal?

Do I exist for the moment, to fill my belly?

Is my purpose to merely seek fleeting or rapidly passing pleasures?

Does my life have some goal? Some ultimate destiny?

Poets, story tellers, theaters, screenwriters, philosophers, and everyday people have dealt with those questions for thousands of years of human history. Is that merely a coincidence?

In a sense, I was fortunate. Not that my life has been easy. Easier than some, harder than others. But I was fortunate because I was born into a home where people thought! Where people discussed the great issues of life in a deep and meaningful way.

And I'm sharing those ways with you. I've never asked for a dime from you, nor do I have any plans to do so. I have been given certain gifts, but you can rest assured that you have your gifts too.

We all have gifts.

Those gifts are all unique. Properly used, each gift in each person that has ever lived or will ever live is beautiful. In sharing what I've learned, I hope to be like that famous saying, it is better to light one candle that it is to curse the darkness.

The conflicts and wars in our households, places we live, work, worship, or do stuff, those divisions are a symptom of the problem of Good vs. Evil.

Of the battle between God and the Devil.

But in the proper understanding of reality, as powerful as the Devil (Satan, Lucifer, the anti-Christ, etc.) may be, God, the Creator of All is far more powerful.

God gave us free will.

We can choose to fritter away our time on all sorts of distractions, pleasures, and pain killers.

Or...

Or, we can decide to seek the truth, seek the love, seek the hopeful reality that reveals the source of all conflict.

Unity in truth. Unity in love. Those are the ways to solve conflicts.

Politicians can help or harm that process. But politicians can't solve the world's ills. They never have.

Many politicians never will.

Business people can sell us products or services. They may be ethical or unethical. We may need some of those products and services.

But no business can sell us God. No business can sell us happiness. No business can sell us the key to the road of eternal life.

We don't just talk about religion, and philosophy here in the "Reality Check" series. I like to write about housing and other many other topics.

But if you've been following this series for the past year, then you may have sensed that there is some secret sauce for decoding the mysteries behind the various subjects that we tackle.

It isn't that I'm smarter than the next gal or guy. I've been fortunate. I was blessed. I was taught from a young age, still made mistakes, but was taught how to think and why we should believe that there is a God. God the Creator of all has our best interests in mind. No one pays me to write these columns. God has given me certain gifts, and I'm sharing some of that with you.

We have to earn a living.

We have to pay the bills.

We have to get along with family, co-workers or people that we meet.

We can pass a million laws, and they are guaranteed not to accomplish what the Ten Commandments of God could.

We have so many laws, even the lawyers do not know them all. So, there are experts in this or that kid of law.

These are all symptoms of the core problems of life. It is the battle between Good and evil. Between right and wrong. Between God and the devil.

Some, wittingly or not, pick evil. Some people pick devilish ways to undermine you, a business, a town, or a society. They may seem to have the upper hand.

But God is at work through human free will.

God didn't tell me to wake up and write this article. At least, not in so many words. I didn't go to sleep last night thinking about this topic. Perhaps there was a nudge. Some idea dropped into my mind, and when I woke up, here I am writing and sharing what are the root causes of conflicts.

I don't want to spoil it. There won't be a complete victory until the end of time. We don't know when that will be. It could be later today. It could be thousands of years from now. We do not know. Those that claim to know are at best guessing. There are books that have been written by those who were convinced that the end of time was at hand. In many cases, those books, articles, talks, etc. were dozens to hundreds of years ago.

So, my point is the same one that Jesus said. We do not know the day or the hour. We do not know when our life will come to an end.

But we ought to know what the Truth is. We ought to know why we seek love. Why we have hope. It is simple. God put those notions deep within us. We can try to ignore them. Millions do, with all sorts of distractions and pain killers.

But we can't begin to solve that pain without God's help. Not my help, God's help.

God told us that way. We have to be humble enough to listen, read, learn, and then...struggle to do.

We can't have perfect peace on earth. But we can have MORE peace on earth.

We can't have perfect joy on earth. But we can have MORE joy on earth.

We can't do many things, but we as sons and daughters of the living and loving God claim our birthright.

Near or at the core of every division in society there is a battle between Good and evil. Never forget that reality.
