‘Charlie Kirk Warned Bad Stuff Happens When People Stop Talking-Let’s Keep Talking America’
Perhaps more than ever, left and right need to be willing to listen-read-think about areas of common ground-common sense & mutual respect.
Some have literally cheered the death of Charlie Kirk. Really? A young wife, two younger children, friends, family, colleagues and fans are grieving.
The headline topic is a paraphrase of a quote from Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk used by the Daily Torch and provided to this writer for MHProNews, MHLivingNews, this "Reality Check" series for this Patch.

Part I
Charlie Kirk Warned That ‘When People Stop Talking, Really Bad Stuff Starts.’ Let’s Keep Talking, America.

“[W]hen people stop talking, really bad stuff starts. When marriages stop talking, divorce happens. When civilizations stop talking, civil war ensues. When you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group… What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have a reasonable disagreement where violence is not an option.”
That was the late Charlie Kirk in a video I saw posted this morning on X from one of his many visits to our nation’s college campuses (I cannot say which) to meet with students, especially those he disagreed with, embodying the very spirit of the civil society — promoting debate, carrying on a conversation and embracing the freedom of speech that representative government depends on.
He was being asked why he was there on campus. Why bother? Because he thought young Americans needed a voice and that it matters that we can keep speaking up and to one another. Keep talking. That’s what he believed. He’s right.
Kirk’s voice was tragically silenced by an assassin’s bullet on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, at an American Comeback event where he met 3,000 students. A manhunt for the killer is underway as of this writing, who the FBI report they have on camera as the shocked nation awaits justice for the senseless murder of the 31-year-old conservative activist who founded Turning Point USA and leaves behind his wife and two children.
President Donald Trump just announced at the Pentagon 9/11 memorial services that Kirk will receive the presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously for his dedication to America, the Constitution and the republic we share.
A republic and a Constitution that we have, and which we could easily lose to blood, as he warned, of what could happen if we stop talking.
In 1835’s Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville described the civil society’s prerequisite, a “general equality of conditions” that “extends far beyond the political character and the laws of the country, and that it has no less empire over civil society than over the Government; it creates opinions, engenders sentiments, suggests the ordinary practices of life, and modifies whatever it does not produce.”
In short, it is the ability to influence one another. De Tocqueville wrote that we do so via political associations peacefully: “In America the citizens who form the minority associate, in order, in the first place, to show their numerical strength, and so to diminish the moral authority of the majority; and, in the second place, to stimulate competition, and to discover those arguments which are most fitted to act upon the majority; for they always entertain hopes of drawing over their opponents to their own side, and of afterwards disposing of the supreme power in their name. Political associations in the United States are therefore peaceable in their intentions, and strictly legal in the means which they employ; and they assert with perfect truth that they only aim at success by lawful expedients.”
In America, the majority rules but always must compete with other ideas, stand in elections and peacefully transfer power when the people have spoken. We persuade one another over the country’s direction.
Charlie Kirk believed in God, America, the Constitution and in these principles that our country was founded on. And he never gave up hope of winning the argument because he understood that majorities are built by addition.
Kirk arrived politically at a time when Republicans were still the opposition party, but he would eventually be a part of the majority coalition that elected President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2024. As de Tocqueville taught, “they always entertain hopes of drawing over their opponents to their own side…”
If you weren’t convinced, he might still try to win you over.
That is our calling now. To keep talking, keep speaking to one another and to continue the civil society for which we all depend. Our very lives and liberties depend on it.
What we saw yesterday is a painful reminder of the jaws of the state of nature that ever-presently threatens our way of life, our democracy and our republic.
It reminds us of what almost happened last year when assassins attempted not once but twice to take President Trump from us in Pennsylvania and Florida. To decide the election for themselves by taking matters into their own hands. To decide for all when the debate could not be won.
And it reminds us of what could always happen if the talking ever stops. We speak to one another and then we decide at the ballot box. We will keep talking, Charlie.

When Corporate America Set America Down a Dark Path
The political violence we are seeing today is a result of a torn social contract. And that didn't start on partisan terms, it started in corporate America.

Americans today are grappling with the deeply frightening specter of political violence. I don’t have much to say about what to do now, as like most people, I feel powerless. But I want to offer some thoughts on how we got here, how Americans came to deeply distrust one another. Part of it is social media, which has a business model of polarization, but I would go back further, to the 1970s or 1980s, to the New Right of 1978 and its corporate backers. But since it’s the anniversary of September 11th, it’s worth discussing one lesser known event that occurred around that traumatic event.

It was a room full of people who were mostly 40 years old and up, so everyone remembered that day. Everyone stood in silence, including the executives of the fire truck makers.
On CNBC this morning, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this week, the anchors, most of whom are in their 60s, were remembering 9/11 with former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, discussing the horror of that day. When the attacks started, I was in Boston, reading a chat on the financial site TheStreet.com. All of a sudden, one of the people in the chat said a plane hit near him outside. That seemed like a horrible accident. Then a plane crashed into another building. Then one hit the Pentagon.
This was no accident. America was under attack, fostering a deeply dislocated feeling, after the peaceful 1990s. There were many different ways to respond; George Bush was President, and after the attacks he had approval ratings near 90%, because he talked of both unity and vengeance. Publicly, Americans had never felt more together.
But there was a private response that was much uglier, and hasn’t been fully recognized, even today. The Wall Street Journal reported a story in 2006 that showed just how cynical corporate America and Wall Street was. As soldiers deployed and rescuers dug, “Boards of directors of scores of American companies… handed out millions of bargain-priced stock options to their top executives.”

A Wall Street Journal analysis shows how some companies rushed, amid the post-9/11 stock-market decline, to give executives especially valuable options. A review of Standard & Poor's ExecuComp data for 1,800 leading companies indicates that from Sept. 17, 2001, through the end of the month, 511 top executives at 186 of these companies got stock-option grants. The number who received grants was 2.6 times as many as in the same stretch of September in 2000, and more than twice as many as in the like period in any other year between 1999 and 2003.

The corporate executives who participated in this orgy of greed were industrials who later offshored everything to China, such as Black & Decker. They were banks like Merrill Lynch who later gorged on mortgage backed securities and needed bailouts. They were health conglomerates like UnitedHealth Group, which gave its CEO Channing Wheeler 96,000 options at the post-9/11 quarterly low. Many of these firms, as they were paying off executives to ”retain” them, laid off workers while publicly setting up grants and charities for the victims of the tragedy.
On the political side, it wasn’t much better. With his immense popularity, George W. Bush enmeshed the U.S. in wars in the Middle East...

This unethical group looting after 9/11 was a preview of corporate misbehavior. Over the next fifteen years, these guys would engineer the China shock, the financial crisis, systemic monopolization, the opioid crisis, and general corporate lawlessness. It’s why social media, whose polarizing algorithms tear us apart, never got regulated. It is why the Republicans, and then Americans writ large, turned to Donald Trump, who said he would shake up the system. It is why we don’t trust each other. After 9/11, Americans were asked to have faith in their nation, to be unified. And corporate America treated us like the rubes and suckers they think we are.
...After I left the hearing, I saw that conservative activist Charlie Kirk had been killed in a political assassination, one of many that have happened this year.
I don’t know what to do about this spiral of political violence. But our social fabric has been ripping apart for a long time.

Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Is a Turning Point for America
Charlie Kirk’s death should remind Republicans that without making family formation affordable, they risk losing a generation to radicalism and despair.

As the nation grapples with the news that conservative activist and commentator Charlie Kirk was gunned down in cold blood while conducting one of his signature campus debates at Utah Valley University, it is of paramount importance for our political leaders both to recognize the political moment we are in and to try to defuse a potentially combustible situation. While conservatives will be tempted to demonize whoever the deluded shooter turns out to be, and liberals will undoubtedly call for more ineffective gun control legislation, neither reaction can hope to lead to anything productive.
Another tribute is in order to honor the memory of Kirk, who was one of the first to recognize that the radicalization of the left has been driven largely by economic disenfranchisement, a point that often goes unacknowledged by leading intellectual voices on the political right.
[MHProNews' notes what Wasinger was referring to is not so different than what Stoller pointed to in his thoughts on apparently corrupt behavior by corporations in the wake of this or that crisis in U.S. history].

Kirk was uniquely clear-eyed in seeing this as not only a disastrous political analysis but also as a whitewash of the terrible policy choices that have caused so many Americans, particularly young people, to give up on the American Dream.
While it is certainly true that the collapse of traditional Christian morality and the institutions that support it over the last 50 years has significantly eroded the stability of marriage, family, communities, and other mediating institutions that have historically served as bulwarks against tyranny, the Conservative Inc. caricature of Gen Z as rich, lazy, and entitled is hardly a complete—or fair—assessment of the political and social reality we face.
The truth is that Gen Z, by a whole variety of measures, faces a much tougher socio-economic reality than any other American generation in memory.
The decision to get married and form a family is not only negatively affected by the decline of the Christian ethic, but it is discouraged by an economy and a social structure that is no longer working for young people. The reality is that America, circa 2025, is not conducive to affordable family formation, and Gen Z is well aware of this.
Even many of their parents are waking up to the fact that the American Dream of providing the next generation with greater prospects of professional achievement and material wealth than the last seems to be on life support.

...Since 1981, the median age of homebuyers, the best measure of affordability and an ownership stake in the community, has gone from 31 to 56 today.
The median age of first-time homebuyers has gone from 28 to 38 during the same time.
Since the 1980s, stock market wealth has become increasingly concentrated among older Americans, and the percentage of young Americans with stock ownership has plummeted since the financial crisis of 2008.
The recent public relations campaign of the World Economic Forum, selling the notion to young people in Western societies that “you will own nothing and be happy” because of all the efficiency and ease of a modern technological economy, seems to have been adopted wholesale by the American managerial elite responsible for creating the perverse incentives that have created and handed down a system characterized by degraded prospects of advancement and stability for people at the prime age of forming families.
We are seeing the rise of an entire generation of dispossessed Russian serfs in a rental economy full of technological toys and conveniences that distract them from the fact that they own nothing, and they live in a country where things are visibly degrading, in contrast to the hopeful, upwardly mobile economy of previous American generations.

It is largely a product of technological progress and an affluent society, with wealth increasingly concentrated at the top among the ownership elite who reap all the gains of economic growth. At the expense of the hollowed-out middle class.
Kirk argued that the more that the rising generation concludes that the current system is not working for them, the more prone they are to endorse radical, revolutionary, “tear down the system” political solutions that are purely destructive, including socialism and communism.
Part of the appeal of Donald Trump and the MAGA movement is this same fundamental perception that the current system is not working and needs to be radically revamped.
But unless we Make Family Formation Affordable Again, we are going to lose the political and policy argument, especially if we focus exclusively on moral decline as the root of the problem. It’s not what you would call a winning message to castigate the rising generation of voters as lazy, whiny, entitled brats who deserve their fate.
There can be no better tribute to Kirk—who literally gave his life attempting to reintegrate young people into the American system and to get Republicans to wake up to the dangers of radicalization if they failed to do so—than for President Trump and the GOP Congress to enact a Charlie Kirk Act for Affordable Family Formation. Republicans in Washington need to seize the moment so that some good can come of this horrific incident.

In no particular order of importance.
1) The point of the quotes from Rob Wasinger or Matt Stoller is not to imply that the left or right see everything the same. Clearly, that's not reality. But often, if someone pays close attention to the details, some on the left (e.g.: Stoller) or on the right (e.g.: Wasinger) may point to similar facts or evidence.
2) Wasinger is correct about the World Economic Forum (WEF). We dealt with that subject during the Covid 19 years. The billionaire and corporate class plus their political allies were pushing the message that "you will own nothing and you will be happy." It was propaganda, pure and simple. Some tried to make it out like it was a 'conspiracy theory.' Hardly. It was a WEF video and related information.
3) Part of Stoller's message is that corporations often behave in corrupt ways and that they rig the system in their own favor. Antitrust action is needed, he argues. In several respects, he is correct, just as Wasinger is correct in saying that the younger generations of adults face a more difficult economic and political landscape compared to what their parents faced. To Stoller's credit, he recently wrote that he 'doesn't like Trump' but that aspects of the federal system, including the Federal Reserve system, has 'lost its legitimacy.

5) Herland was born in Africa and moved to Scandanavia later in her life. She has a reasonably objective view of what is happening in the U.S., which she knows impacts the rest of the world too. During the 2024 election, she supported Trump. But why? Why did Herland, or the late Charlie Kirk, support Trump?

6) Herland and Kirk understood that much (not all) of the media leans left. Much of the media favors the corporate interests. Donald Trump was battling against the "Bush" wing of the Republican Party, which Wasinger aptly called "Conservative Inc." The reality is that Democrats in recent years have gotten more money from the Corporate/billionaire class as then Republicans have.
