An officer was dispatched to Walmart on Loudon Road for a report of a shoplifter in custody. The officer spoke to a loss prevention employee who accused Wright of concealing items in her handbag inside the store. According to an affidavit, the employee said Wright “paid for some items, but did not pay for others and tag-swapped one item” — paying for one $20 item and attempting to steal $131.54 worth of items. She was stopped on the sidewalk outside the store, the report said. The officer eyed security video and then questioned Wright after reading her Miranda rights, the report stated. “Leslie would later disclose to me that she steals when she feels like she does not have control in her life because the theft adds some control,” the officer wrote. Around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2022, an officer saw a vehicle with a defective headlight and an inspection sticker that did not match the license plate registration on Fisherville Road. The Volkswagen Jetta was pulled over. While speaking with the driver, a man, and a passenger, a woman, the officer saw a hollowed pen tube with brown and dark residue protruding from a purse the woman was holding, according to an affidavit. The officer requested the passenger window to be lowered, but they refused, saying it was broken, according to a report. When the passenger was asked to open the door, she also refused and zipped up her purse, the affidavit said. The report stated the officer also noted multiple small baggies in plain view in an opened box in the rear passenger seat. The officer also found a piece of tin foil on the floor of the rear passenger area, a report said. The driver, identified as Demond, “had track marks (the line of injection site) with what appeared to be dried blood on the top of his right hand,” a report stated. The officer informed Demond and Newton, the passenger, the vehicle was to be impounded and requested they exit, which they did, the report said. Six days later, after requesting a search warrant, a scale with a tan residue, a loaded syringe, a small scale in a handbag, a glass pipe with burnt residue, and a second loaded syringe, as well as used syringes, baggies, hollow pin tubes, and a foil with burnt residue were found in the Jetta, an affidavit said. On Feb. 10, the state lab confirmed methamphetamine on a glass pipe and meth and fentanyl on the digital scale. The two syringes, loaded with fentanyl and a scale with tan residue, were still pending. A warrant was then issued for the arrest of both Demond and Newton.
