Lift up the Cross? What does it mean to Lift High the Cross?

'We speak about the regular challenges of life as "crosses" unemployment, ill-health, accidents, addiction, and natural disasters'-BUT...

Even in the early years of the Church, the notion of the Cross was considered a sign of contradiction. So, it should not be a surprise if our first reaction to 'embracing the Cross of Christ' is to be less than excited about that. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that there is evil in the world. It also doesn't take a diploma or expertise to see that there is good and beauty in the world too. Some wonder why a Good God allows evil. There are many such questions, but it should be obvious that all such questions have been answered by believers for some 2,000 years. Be confident that no matter what you, a friend, or other person's thought may be that seems to be an obstical to faith, they all have an answer. "Such challenges do not break us but make us stronger (cf. Rom 8:35-39)," said Rev. Emmanuel Akalue. Perhaps the best know Gospel verse is this: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perishbut might have eternal life." But many do not know what comes before and after that verse. "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,but that the world might be saved through him." Homily - Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross

On this Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, we share the message, “Celebrating the Cross of Jesus in the light of glory.”

Beloved, in Catholic Christian Tradition, every September 14th, we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. But why such a feast? Why exalt the Cross? Many people would rather run away from the Cross (cf. Matt 6:31-34; 12:39; John 6:27).

But not us! The Cross is at the center of our faith.

Christ’s Paschal Mystery – His Passion, Death and Resurrection – is embodied in the Cross (cf. 1 Cor 1:17-18, 22-24).

See how St. Paul exalted the Cross, declaring categorically, “But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14).

He was speaking about the Paschal Mystery! Hence, the celebration of the Triduum – Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil – is the highest and most solemn expression of our faith (cf. John 2:19).

Many times, we speak about the regular challenges of life as “crosses”: unemployment, ill-health, accidents, addiction, and natural disasters.

Surely, they are crosses, but they are not the CROSS in the primary sense.

The Cross is essentially what we suffer with joy on account of the faith (cf. Matt 5:11-12; Acts 5:40-41; 1 Cor 9:23; 1 Pet 4:13).

For Bernadin Cardinal Gantin, “The Cross is the joy of self-sacrifice, the joy of being able to give for the good of others, a willingness to do good even if it means suffering at the hands of others. It is an oblation of love that includes the giving up of time, of legitimate rights, of preferred relationships, of health and even life itself… to serve the needs of others” (A Call to Holiness, Worldwide Retreat for Priests, 1984).

Many Catholic Christians have suffered joyfully for Christ’s sake and for the Gospel since the days of the Roman Empire (cf. Mark 10:29).

Such challenges do not break us but make us stronger (cf. Rom 8:35-39).

In today’s world, under “Prosperity Gospel Christianity,” many people are embarrassed by the reality of the Cross in our faith. Please, do not be fooled. Avoid false Christianity. Never forget the words of Christ to Peter who tried to dissuade Him from the Cross (cf. Mark 8:31): “Get behind me, Satan…. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Matt 16:23). Christ was not ashamed of the Cross (cf. Heb 12:1-2).

Christ Himself invited us to embrace the Cross: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).

The Blessed Mother united herself wholeheartedly with Jesus at the time of His Passion and Cross, along with St. John the Beloved Apostle and a few of the other women (cf. John 19:25).

So, we are not ashamed of the Cross (cf. Matt 11:28-30; Phil 3:18-19; Rom 1:16; 2 Tim 1:8; 1 Pet 2:21).

Our First Reading (Num 21:4-9) shows how Israel rejected the sacrifices they had to make for their freedom. Faced with hardship in the desert, they complained vehemently and spurned the manna God provided for them as “wretched food!”

How ungrateful! Please, it is never okay to be mad at God (cf. James 4:10).

Consequently, they were attacked by seraph serpents and many died.

When they repented and asked for forgiveness, God intervened telling Moses, “Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and whoever looks at it after being bitten will live.”

Moses did as the Lord commanded, and the people were healed. Can you discern the importance of sacred images from this passage?

This why it is laughable when some Christian groups ignorantly claim that every image is an idol. Nonsense! God has the power to heal people through statues and images Our Gospel Passage (John 3:13-17) shows Jesus on the Cross as the fulfillment of Moses’ serpent on a pole.

In Christ’s words, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”

As Scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced” (John 19:37).

The Cross becomes our SPIRITUAL ANTIDOTE, the SPIRITUAL VACCINE (cf. Zach 12:10; John 19:37) especially against spiritual attacks of “serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19).

Hence, the image of a serpent on a pole is now universally recognized as the emblem of the medical profession.

Also, we know the American Statue of Liberty in New Harbor, New York, symbolizes our freedom and independence.

Even more so, we embrace and celebrate the Cross as our Christian Statue of Liberty. The Cross is our sign of victory and power (cf. 1Cor 1:17), not a symbol of weakness.

Finally, our Second Reading (Phil 2:6-11) shows us the Cross in the light of glory.

Because Jesus “denied” Himself and took our lowly form and accepted death on the Cross, “God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Consequently, Christ’s death WAS NOT an execution, was not a defeat. He was a willing victim for our salvation (cf. John 3:16; 14:30-31; Heb 12:2). He does not need our pity (cf. Luke 23:28), He wants us to repent and receive His salvation: “Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore His sacred name!” Amen.
