It should be obvious that most (if not all) of us want some of the same things. We want joy. We want happiness. We want truth (example, do you really want to be lied to?). If we had the choice, how long would we want those blessings? Just briefly, or forever? The answer for billions is "forever." We chase such things, or so we may be led to think, in this life. It can be fine to seek good things during this life, for both ourselves, and for the sake of others.

But even more important than passing pleasures is having goodness (vs. evil) for all eternity. Thus the importance of today's readings.

Many, but not all, Christian Churches follow the "Revised Common Lectionary (RCL)" said left-leaning Google's artificial intelligence (AI) powered preview (Gemini, 'not logged in'). Among those who have the same Biblical readings every Sunday are Anglican/Episcopal Churches, Lutheran Churches, Methodist Churches, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ, and the Catholic Church.

Woe to the complacent in Zion!
Lying upon beds of ivory,
stretched comfortably on their couches,
they eat lambs taken from the flock,
and calves from the stall!
Improvising to the music of the harp,

yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!

that fell from the rich man's table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,

'My child, remember that you received

Part II

“Called to use God’s Blessings in a responsible manner.”

We celebrate the 26th Sunday of the Year and share this message: “Called to use God’s Blessings in a responsible manner.” Beloved, only God is self-sufficient and infinite in all perfections: truth, beauty, goodness, love, etc. We are indebted to Him for all we are and have (cf. Ps 24:1), all our spiritual and material gifts. He made us for interdependence; we are not to become islands onto ourselves, in isolationism and individualism. As St. Peter says, “As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace” (1Pet 4:10). We always need each other. Some people misguidedly say, “I made it on my own; I don’t owe anybody anything!” Baloney! God created you; someone gave birth to you and “it takes a village to raise a child.” Even now, we continue to be indebted to others: our doctors, teachers, farmers, first responders, grocery store workers, etc. And when we die, others (family and friends) will bury us: I cannot bury myself.

In our First Reading (Amos 6:1, 4-7), Prophet Amos condemns complacency, selfishness and greed. “Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches…. Improvising to the music of the harp [enjoying expensive food and drink and anointing] themselves with the best oils [expensive makeups]; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!” What an indictment of the rich who are complacent, not only in Zion but anywhere in the world: enjoying lavish lifestyles, overindulging in fancy epicurean feasts, and engaging in wasteful spending – apparently having fun – but showing no concern for the poor around them. Amos declares, “They shall be the first to go into exile!” Wow! There are consequences.

Amos was not indicting every rich person, but only the complacent ones. He was not saying wealth is evil, as long as it was not acquired fraudulently and used inappropriately. He was lamenting the wrong attitude toward wealth, the abuse of riches through selfishness and greed (cf. 1Tim 6:10). This does not only affect a certain class of wealthy people. Wealth is relative. So, he is speaking to each of us at our own level of wealth. St. Paul says, “What have you that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift?” (1Cor 4:7).

In the Gospel Passage (Luke 16:19-31), Jesus comes as the New Amos to condemn this kind of complacency. He relates a parable of “a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen [ROYAL or KINGLY ROBES] and dined sumptuously each day. [But no concern for a poor man Lazarus, lying at his door, covered with sores and dogs licking his wounds].” Jesus reiterates there are dire consequences for such sins of indifference and greed. Hence, after his death, Lazarus was comforted at the bosom of Abraham in heaven (cf. Luke 6:20), while the greedy rich man ended up in the torment of hell. He cried for mercy but it was too late.

Beloved, hell is real. God wants us to help the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, the homeless, the stranger and all those in need: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matt 25:40). Notice the rich man’s plea to Abraham to send a heavenly agent to warn his family on earth did not work. Abraham insisted, “They have Moses and the prophets [bishops, priests, deacons and lay leaders]. Let them listen to them.” Wow! Please, let us evangelize our non-believing family members and friends before it is too late.

Christ’s and Amos’ message have an important spiritual application. As Christians, we have been gifted with the “unsearchable riches of Christ” (Eph 3:8), the Word of God and the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist (cf. Isa 25:6). Therefore, keep in mind Amos’ words: “Woe to the complacent in Zion”. In what ways have I become complacent by not evangelizing the unchurched – THE SPIRITUALLY POOR (cf. Jer 14:18; 23:1-2; 16-18; 1Cor 9:16-17)? Do I look away as the devil continues to brutalize them through a life of dissipation and sinful addictions, with “demonic dogs” licking their sores, inducing them to relish self-destructive behaviors? Am I going to help like a “Good Samaritan,” to bandage their wounds and bring them to the inn (the Church)?

Finally, St Paul says in our Second Reading (1Tim 6:11-16): “Compete well for the faith” (cf. 1Cor 9:24-27) and be faithful to your Baptismal Vows – “the noble confession [of faith you made] in the presence of many witnesses.” May God grant us the grace to use our gifts for the good of all and win His favor in everlasting glory of heaven, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Part III

The famous and popular saint, Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, 'preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words.' But Gemini says that it is a misattribution. What the Franciscan Rule actually said is: "all the brothers, however, preach by their deeds." There are many ways that we can share the beauty and power of the saving truth of the Gospel.
