Acts of Hatred, Racism Come in Immediate Aftermath of Donald Trump's Election

Patch is documenting incidents of hatred and racism in the aftermath of the presidential election.

After a long and contentious election in which Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, there has been a steady stream of demonstrations across the country with protesters unhappy with the results taking to the streets and breaking out in chants of "We reject the president-elect," and "not my president."

The protests are not the only thing to occur in the immediate aftermath of the election. Incidents motivated by racism and hatred have come to the forefront of the national conversation, with an uptick of such incidents being reported across the country. The hateful acts have manifested in schools, college campuses, businesses and places of worship.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is monitoring reports of racist harassment and intimidation and has so far recorded more than 800 such incidents across the country since the election. The SPLC pulled the information from news reports, social media and direct submissions sent to them but noted that each incident could not be independently and immediately verified. And in the week following the election, Attorney General Loretta Lynch addressed the spate of alleged hate crimes, encouraging citizen to continue to report them to local authorities as well as to the Department of Justice.

Find out what's happening in Across Americafor free with the latest updates from Patch.

"Often times, types of harassment overlapped and many incidents, though not all, involved direct references to the Trump campaign," the SPLC stated.

The Anti-Defamation League said following the election of Trump, there has been a sharp spike in reports of racist and anti-Semitic graffiti and vandalism, including the widespread use of swastikas and other Nazi imagery.

Find out what's happening in Across Americafor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Oren Segal, Director for the ADL's center on extremism, told Patch that there are more of these incidents being reported and while it is too early to say if there is a spike particularly and it remains difficult to compare them to another time in history, he said the context is different and somewhat unique.

He said it is not uncommon to see Swastikas or graffiti that is anti-Muslim or anti-gay, however, what is uncommon is seeing incidents linked to a particular campaign. He said the incidents seem to be more than just harassment and vandalism and seem to be, "loaded with the country's anxiety."

In his first interview as president-elect on CBS's "60 Minutes," Trump was asked about the racist and hateful acts popping up in his name. Below is the exchange between Trump and CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl from the interview that aired the week of the election:

Donald Trump: I am very surprised to hear that-- I hate to hear that, I mean I hate to hear that--
Lesley Stahl: But you do hear it?
Donald Trump: I don’t hear it—I saw, I saw one or two instances…
Lesley Stahl: On social media?
Donald Trump: But I think it’s a very small amount. Again, I think it’s--
Lesley Stahl: Do you want to say anything to those people?
Donald Trump: I would say don’t do it, that’s terrible, ‘cause I’m gonna bring this country together.
Lesley Stahl: They’re harassing Latinos, Muslims--
Donald Trump: I am so saddened to hear that. And I say, “Stop it.” If it-- if it helps. I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: Stop it.

Trump's appointment of Stephen Bannon as White House strategist, the former executive of the news website Breitbart who has an alleged history of anti-Semitism and served as the Trump campaign's chief executive, might have negated any of Trump's efforts to call on Americans to stop the hateful acts.

Jonathan Greenblatt, head of the ADL, called Bannon the ringleader of "a loose-knit group of white nationalists and unabashed anti-Semites" in an official ADL statement. The SPLC also issued a strongly worded statement titled "Bannon Must Go."

Another of Trump's appointments is Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as attorney general, a man who is alleged to have called the American Civil Liberties Union and the N.A.A.C.P. “un-American” for “trying to force civil rights down the throats of people” and who reportedly referred to an African-American prosecutor as "boy."

Racial tensions in the country have been heightened lately, and acts of vandalism and violence had already begun to pop up during the general election, such as the vandalism of a black church in Mississippi where the words "Vote Trump" were scrawled on its side or the firebombing of a local GOP office in North Carolina where the words Nazi Republicans leave town or else," were left on a nearby building. Non-white communities have always dealt with racist acts but there is something about the tone of the incidents that have taken place post-election that sets them apart.

Segal, of the ADL, explained that the impact of these incidents is beyond local. While they always affect local communities, people may think of these instances of racism as a reflection of where America is headed.

"Now it almost has the appearance of something that is broader so it creates anxiety," he said.

With a country that is still processing what is going on, Segal said there is leadership required from community leaders up to the highest offices in the nation to reject and condemn what is going on and to do so constantly.

Patch has reported on several instances of such incidents and is compiling a list that will be constantly updated as we report on more acts motivated by racism and hatred. (Note: The list is organized based on the date Patch reported on the incident)
