EAST HARTFORD, CT — As we approach the 105th anniversary of the end of World War I, it's fitting to take a drive to East Hartford and the latest Hidden Gem.

There, along the 800 block of Main Street, stands the Doughboy statue, a sentinel standing guard over the nearby library and the town's center of government. Town historians point out the soldier is "at the ready" for the entire town.

The statue was put in place in 1929, "by the citizens of East Hartford," and underwent restoration work five years ago to commemorate the war's 100th anniversary. The statue was designed to remember those who fought and died and those who survived.
