Hidden Gems Of Hartford And Tolland Counties

TOLLAND, CT — So you're on Route 74 in Tolland heading to the center of town ...

You climb a hill, navigate a bend in the road and it appears ...

Whoa ... that's a giant Santa.

Welcome to this week's Hidden Gem. It's not up all year, but it's so fascinating around the holidays, it's worth a peek (OK ... more like a gawk) whether cruising through north central Connecticut or to and from the University of Connecticut (it's 7 miles from campus).

The giant Santa is located at 675 Tolland Stage Road, the local address for that stretch of Route 74. It's the home of Chris Farley, who says he just likes to host the display for area residents. He also displays a giant pumpkin during the Halloween season.

Those who want to pose in front of it or just take a photo are welcome to use the cutout on his driveway rather than parking in the plaza across the street and risk crossing the busy part of Route 74.

The Tolland Santa might have a slight resemblance to the Santa in "The Polar Express."
