STORRS, CT — It's not a secret that Horsebarn Hill sits prominently at the north end of the University Connecticut Campus.

But tucked on a knoll in the same area is The Farwell Barn and it's the Gem for this week.

The circa 1870 Farwell Barn is also known as the Jacobson Barn or Jacobson's Barn. Whatever we call it, the structure has been part of the National Register of Historic Places since 2001 and among the first prominent buildings at UConn.

UConn historians tell us that the barn was built when Isaac Farwell owned the land, which the family had been farming since the 1700s. It stayed in the family until George Jacobson purchased the farm in 1908.

Three years later, Jacobson sold the property to the Connecticut Agricultural College, which eventually became UConn.

The barn is worth a visit whether on the way to the UConn Dairy Bar or just touring Horsebarn hill.
