SOMERS, CT — This week's journey to a Hidden Gem takes us to a nook in a Somers shopping plaza where we can check out some good old-fashioned Italian food made from recipes that go back generations.

Welcome to Mario's Pizzeria & Ristorante at 48 South Road in Somers. Mario Ferrentino and Nikko Plescia are the men behind the aprons there.

Mario's is part of the Ferrentino restaurant legacy. Mario Ferrentino's s father, Claudio, along with brothers Giuseppe and Mario, own Teresa's Restaurant In Ware, MA. Teresa's opened In 1980 and has been considered a culinary landmark ever since. Family members have spread the wealth with establishments in Connecticut (Francesco's in Suffield and Mario's in Somers) and Massachusetts.

The menu is extensive. Appetizers are the traditional — like fried calamari and fried ravioli — and the adventurous — like stuffed eggplant.

There is, of course, pasta and meatballs on the menu. Other main dishes include pasta with clams, shrimp marinara, Alfredo offerings, chicken marsala, stuffed shells and Nikko's Pasta A La Vodka.

More information about the restaurant, including menus and online ordering, may be found here.
