MANCHESTER, CT — This week's Gem is hidden, even by hidden standards.

It's Doug Smith Island, situated on the Hockanum River along the trail system that follows the waterway.

It's a 2-mile loop, part of the Oakland spur, can be accessed from the Kohl's parking lot in Manchester.

The island is named after Doug Smith (1928 to 2017), who was dedicated to restoring the trails along the river, particularly near that split.

Some drawbacks are noise from Interstate-84 (that eventually fades) and a trek near some businesses, but the loop does provide some nice scenery and wildlife viewing along the river after a bridge crossing.
